As described, sand falling onto a torch will become the sand item instantly. This also works for columns of sand blocks, which makes mining sand a rather interesting experience.
This was found on version 1.4.0.1 on Ubuntu 19.10, and seems to be easily reproducible across a wide range of scenarios (I haven't found a way to put a sand block on top of a torch yet). I haven't tested other versions or OSes.
