Stuck On "Receiving Tile Data"

I've been playing on my friends server and recently when I try to connect to his server I get stuck on the screen "Receiving Tile Data: (something %) , I let it try to load all the way up but it dosnt it just gets stuck and wont load up the server and is preventing me from joining. If you know how to fix this then that would really help me out, thx .

Are you using Steam overlay? That sometimes causes the Tile Data message to just sit there without loading.
