The Mage Class in Terraria has a wide range of weapons, armor and accessories that suit any time of play. In terms of a 2D game, there are some limitations when it comes to looking at the true potential of a mage player; but from experience as playing as a Mage, it is possible to define three separate 'types' of mage and their roles.
The offensive mage dives into battle with high-damage spells and staffs. Their attacks are most effective in single-target situations such as the Mechanical Bosses, and, depending on the preferred weapons; events such as the Pumpkin / Frost Moon.
Depending of the difficulty level of your Terraria world, the ideal Offensive Mage loadout can vary.
Pre-Hardmode Offensive Mage
The Demon Scythe
The Demon Scythe is a Pre-Hardmode magic book which drops from Demons and Voodoo Demons in the Underworld. It is an extremely effective weapon for it's stage in the game and can deal damage to multiple entities as shown below.
"The Demon Scythe's projectiles emit a good deal of light, and depending on their momentum when impacting a surface, will produce illuminating sparks that continue on the same trajectory, even through thick walls."

The Demon Scythe is one of the few effective Pre-Hardmode magic weapons available for beginner mages. In order to obtain the Demon Scythe, the player must kill a Voodoo Demon or Demon to have a chance of getting it, is there is only a 2.86% (1/35) of the item to drop. Although the chances are quit slim- the effort put in to obtain this magic weapon is worth it as it will assist you though Pre-Hardmode Terraria.
Flower of Fire
Keeping with Underworld-Themed Pre-Hardmode magic weapons, the Flower of Fire is another great magic weapon for beginner mages to use.
"The Flower of Fire is a magic weapon that launches a slow-moving fireball that bounces along the ground, being strongly affected by gravity, and ricochets up to four times before dissipating. It has a 50% chance of inflicting the On Fire! debuff for five seconds"

In order to obtain the Flower of Fire, the player must successfully retrieve the weapon from a Shadow Chest
Bee Gun
The Bee Gun is another Pre-Hardmode magic weapon which is available to new mages. This weapon is fairly easy to obtain, as it drops from the Queen Bee with a 33% chance of dropping.
"The Bee Gun is a magic weapon that fires 1-4 homing bee projectiles that can ricochet up to three times before dissipating, and homes in on enemies within close enough range and latches on to them, dealing constant damage."
