I enjoy building quite lots. And experimentation with the visuals of the game sometimes leads me to weird results, which can be amazing combination of block textures and sometimes weird ones.
I have found a somewhat inconsistency on the waterfall-like effect when halfing a block that is below a liquid. On water, this effect feels natural, and is quite intuitive. However, for honey and lava, I haven't tested shimmer, the effect seems to relate directly to the "settle-speed" of the liquid. Thus honey, the slowest, has the worst visuals and lava barely improves.
