Explanation:
Hi! My idea is that to improve weapons in general there could be a system of ranks. To go up a rank for a weapon you would have to craft a Broken Hero Sword (or some other extremely rare item) and your current weapon. The new weapon would have "Mk.", plus a roman numeral denoting the current mark, added to the end of the name. The current modifier on the weapon would be kept. I was thinking a five rank cap would be good since otherwise the stats would be insane. Here's an example for the naming: Steve the generic Terrarian has a Legendary Terra Blade and a Broken Hero Sword. He crafts them and gets a "Legendary Terra Blade Mk. I".

Stats:
If Magical:
+7% Damage
+5% Speed
+2% Critical Strike Chance
-5% Mana Cost
+7% Knockback
*+100% Value
(This is indeed just half of the mythical stats, rounded down.)

If Melee:
+7% Damage
+5% Speed
+2% Critical Strike Chance
+5% Size
+7% Knockback
*+100% Value
(Half of legendary.)

If Ranged:
+7% Damage
+5% Speed
+2% Critical Strike Chance
+5% Velocity
+7% Knockback
*+100% Value
(Half of unreal.)

If Summoner:
+12% Damage
+1 Minion
*+100% Value
(That's a lot of damage.)

*Should not be displayed.

NOTE WELL: The stats will all be rounded down regardless of whether they are above .5 or not!!! Also, I calculated these by raising the damage value step by step. If you try to do 35% increase on damage on these weapons you will get different damage values. Use the wiki to calculate damage: http://terraria.wiki.gg/Damage#Calculations.

Example: Here I will show you what the damage will be of each rank on (#1) the Mythical Bubble Gun (81 Damage), (#2) the Legendary Terra Blade (101 Damage), (#3) the Unreal Pulse Bow w/ Cursed Arrows (91 Damage), and (#4) the Ruthless Tempest Staff (59 Damage). I chose these weapons because they are high damage weapons.

Mk 1:
#1: 86
#2: 108
#3: 97
#4: 66

Mk 2:
#1: 92
#2: 115
#3: 103
#4: 73

Mk 3:
#1: 98
#2: 123
#3: 110
#4: 81

Mk 4:
#1: 104
#2: 131
#3: 117
#4: 90

Mk 5:
#1: 111
#2: 140
#3: 125
#4: 100

When reading these damage values you should remember that no armor, accessories, or buffs have been calculated in.

Conclusion: This is my suggestion. Possibly you could have mark 5 be an even greater stat increase than the previous marks, or weapons don't keep their modifiers. I like it, as it gives broken hero swords a purpose, besides the terra blade.

(Soon, the copper shortsword will be my best weapon. MUAHAHAHAHHAHAH)
 
Welp, time to use my 20 BKS and hoard some more!
I feel You should have something like Broken Hero Remains(from swamp thing,Frankenstein) and having a few of them, craft it into a Broken Hero Staff, Broken Hero Sword,etc.
Otherwise, pretty decent, may need damage tweaking a bit.
 
I don't like it. Not just because it increases the grind, but also because it unbalances the game. Progression in this game is based on aquiring new equipment, not upgrading old equipment. It would require a major rebalance of every single weapon.
