Member-Run Project The Fallen Star Bestiary

Sure thing, I mean the banner you made for The Boreal Bookshelf was pretty spectacular. If we are to add more members, I think you'll be working on a seperate entry whilst us other four are working on another. Production speed increase.

Yay! As an actual request, Lihzahrd. Why did they build the temple? Why are they locked inside of it. How does Plantera involve them? So much lore that you can think of...

Yay! As an actual request, Lihzahrd. Why did they build the temple? Why are they locked inside of it. How does Plantera involve them? So much lore that you can think of...
Keep in mind we don't do lore. Well we do... We do lore in a factual way, we come up with something we can keep consistent and back up theories.

Yeah, these are bestiary entries, so they don't follow the format Terraria Knowledge used to do and answer questions concerning lore and the sort. This time we go in depth about a specific creature, so it's a lot different.

Demon Eyes are born from a single mother that is the remnant of a great and mighty creature. From birth, they are able to levitate for short periods of time with the aid of a biological organ that allows them to oppose the force of gravity. In its youth, the average Demon Eye will only be able to fly for short distances, and for a low duration of time. However, as they age, these will change as they evolve and become better accustomed to their flight environment. However, a lack of rudders or complex directional appendages renders these creatures unable to change direction mid-flight, so they simply drift and bounce off surfaces. Over many generations, this has led to the development of a thick and almost adamantine-strong cornea which is akin to a mighty aerial battle ram.

Not only are they granted the ability of flight throughout the growing years, but their combat is also greatly enhanced, too. Yes, they might not be the best navigators in the world, but the fact remains the same; older eyes will inflict a lot more damage than a newborn. This is definitely obvious, but this is only to point out the fact that these demon eyes develop solely through evolution, and nothing more.

Origins: Evolutionary science has led to numerous theories of this creature's ancient history. Though one theory is the most likely. From traits observable in their behaviour, movement, and physical functions, it is very possible that they evolved from a mutated eye which kept a small part of the frontal lobe intact when being born from some strange mammal; without direct internal connection with their body they are little more than a parasite without a host. This means they are just that: a sentient eye, with little directional control and only basic desires of food, survival and reproduction. Folklore has given them the name of Demon Eye.

Locating and Tracking:

Demon Eyes, if the fact wasn't already clear, spawn only at night. This means that locating the creature desired will only be possible at late hours, which may or may not cause problems. Demon Eyes tend to bounce around aimlessly, so getting the right direction and area is always required. There's always the possibility of trapping the creature, but that could lead up to aggravation. So if this creature is to be caught, then there are cautious steps that need be taken and set into the brain before advancing any further.

These eyeballs of joy don't normally spawn in packs, but rather quite randomly, which means there will be occasions where none of these eyes will spawn, and other times where there will be a few crowded around a base of operations. All in all; this stage isn't relatively difficult, unless the conditions aren't met. Whilst there isn't necessarily a super easy way to locate and hunt down the Demon Eyes, it's not too hard either. Should prove challenging when the taming step comes to play.

Taming:

Out of a scale of one to ten, there isn't really an estimate or judgement to be made. Demon Eyes are obviously a hassle to get stationary, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. In fact, there are ways of incapacitating the demon eye before advancing with the tame method, which should allow whoever dares capture this creature to get it almost effortlessly. A mixture of both blinkroot and moonglow seeds can be ground laboriously into dust. This proves a great tool when knocking out the eye.

The blinkroot is used for getting into the eye's senses and interfering with it's sensory receptors. The moonglow part of the mix works as an enhancer, which makes the stun travel a lot further, and with increased influence. Once this ground is thrust in the general direction of the precised demon eye, and makes contact, it'll take one or two minutes for it to fall into unconsciousness. That then brings this to the taming.

Unlike most simple creatures demon eyes are highly resistant to imprinting. This is likely caused by their parasitic nature. They have little to no thought process which causes many hazards whilst taming. Some of the more responsive methods of taming are mostly harsh. A basic reward system is the most effective in our studies. One fish, one goal and so forth.

Habitat and Alimentation:

Demon Eyes are one of many species of wanderer that have changed little over the centuries. Their diet mainly consists of small creatures such as slimes and other creatures that drift near them. Due to this they have changed very little and have remained mostly consistent to their original state. The eye is very muscular; to maintain healthy states it must eat high protein content. The tendrils of muscle tissue that trail behind the eye actually help with the aerodynamics of navigating up and down as they can be moved directionally moderately.

Because of the muscular body composition it eats mostly fish and obtains said fish in an interesting manner. This fashion of hunting is called bobbing. If you've witnessed a demon eye fly straight and then gradually decline until level with you (presumably to murder you), you've seen bobbing. They entangle their tendrils just so they might dip below a body of water and swim up rapidly and hope to catch a fish. The mouth of a demon eye is located on the top because of the organs sensitivity (Demon eyes are very gentle creatures and deserve only your love, and murder) and receptive capabilities. The possession of a mouth does not grant them the ability to taste (your sweet skin).

Ailments:

Demon Eyes possess a biological structure much akin to the human eye, and is thus prone to the same ailments. Older eyes are prone to suffering from cataracts, which give their corneas a cloudy hue and restricts their view. On the other hand, atmospheric pollution can also cause mutations, leading to all manner of quirky variants. They do have one lethal weakness: gold, silver and other precious metals. Yes, similar to werewolves, rare metals become a catalyst in the highly volatile yet separate fluids that make up the eye, and when the cornea is pierced by a heavy, rare metal, it makes the eye dissolve in front of your eyes. However, this effect has been used so extensively by villagers on eye culls so much that most eyes have developed a thicker cornea.

Here is a compilation of known diseases:

Cataracts: Much like human eyes, Demon Eyes are also prone to cataracts. A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye. This can lead to impaired vision, as the lens slowly loses its ability to focus light onto their retinas. It is the most common cause of blindness in this species. Age is the most predominate factor in causing cataracts; the proteins located in its lens denature over time and may be accelerated by certain factors such as exposure to radiation. However, it is possible, though rare, for a Demon Eye to develop cataracts due to excessive trauma.

Sleepy Eye: Due to an unforeseen mutation, some Demon Eyes may also develop eyelids. This shields the lens from harmful radiation, though not without a price - it obstructs its vision, and adds difficulty to eating.

Dilated Eye: Pupil dilation is an attempt for the eye to allow more light acceptance in dark scenarios. This is not a necessary function for the Demon Eye, and therefore is not present naturally. The causes of dilation in demon eyes is very limited and can almost always be narrowed down to extreme trauma.

Combat:

Combat is a tricky factor in the Demon Eye's lifestyle. Normally these life-sucking eyeballs would not have difficulty getting the right hit, with the right aim, but they have no sense of direction and instead bounce around in hope they might grab a kill. At least they have a sense of touch so that they might have some knowledge of their whereabouts. This means that whilst they can't exactly get to the right direction, there's always a degree of detection if you are in line of sight or in direct contact.

The combat is, therefore, a little out of place and difficult to study. At one point the eye will come at you with a strong strike, and at other times these eyeballs will be wandering, attempting to detect movement. Overall, it isn't too difficult to fight against a Demon Eye for these listed reasons, which makes confronting them a lot easier if desired.

OK, you seem to have mesed with the format a little, and there are a few errors concerning spaces that you'll need to fix.

That's great to hear guys! Glad you're so enthusiastic and supportive of our hard work. Now I think about it, we really should add a little more humour than usual in our bestiary entries, because why not.
