Official Announcement regarding changes to conversations (private messages)

You yourself even just said it "isn't really wrong"
A lapse in my wording, thats my fault if you've misunderstood my words there. What I said specifically, was
" which isn't really wrong, but when used to quite the excessive extent as it has been... it begins to raise concerns"

What I meant by this was that private chat in and of itself isn't wrong, its fine and we expect it. That is, within reason.
While I can't currently come up with a good example to give, what I was saying is that its perfectly fine to have a few ongoing chats and that is not the problem. The problem is that people have been using the featute excessively, literally in-place of threads.
What is being broken or who is being harmed that a line has to be drawn at all? I would totally yield if there were specific reasons, such as 10-year long message chains filled with attachments taking up petabytes of server memory, coordinated public harassment being organized through private group messages, or even outright illegal materials being exchanged
The feature is being misused and we want to correct that, simply asking people would not have sufficed and so we placed a limit, a line. The problem is extremely long-lived, page heavy conversations that in all likelihood should have taken place in or been their own thread. In addition to this, and its a matter I would like to keep very brief, with large "threads" (in this case, conversations) Reports are naturally made which ends up being very difficult for us to act on as people don't want to invite a staff member or "share too much" leading to a lot of unsolved matters and 'unmoderated' content. This is not something that we want to encourage, especially when it involves the wellbeing of valued users. This is doubly true when the fact that this is an official forum run by the developers of the game is taken into picture.

But so far it seems like the justification boils down to vague "concerns" based purely on speculation regarding the forum statistics of a small group of people. You speak of looking at it objectively, but I have yet to see a firm, measurable objective reason from y'all's end for doing this. (Of course, with this about to hit 400 replies, I may have simply missed it.)
They are not "vague" concerns, we have plenty of reason and context to include them in the discussion within the team that lead up to this change. I promise you that we're not operating based on pure conjecture.
As for our objective reasons I do believe we've outlined a good few of them earlier in the thread from Unit One and myself.

And for emotional clarity, I'm not mad or anything. I'm just little confused and disappointed, feeling like y'all missed the mark on this one and am just motivated enough to step in and say "nah, this ain't it fam".
That's fine, this thread is for discussing it.

Understand that while I believe we're being very transparent on the matter there are degrees of context that we can't discuss in detail.

15,000 posts is around 750 pages. Most threads don't reach anywhere near that. It doesn't strike you as unusual that there are conversations larger than that, on a public forum? I reiterate, this is a forum, not a private chat app.
it doesn’t strike me unusual at all, you wanna know why? Because people have friends and we like talking to friends on daily basis, but now you are restricting people from talking to friends because of your made up reality that it will make the forums better. Can’t you see this isn’t helping anyone? You have caused so much distress and you think you are still in the right. Forums are meant to make friends and talk to them while also talking in the threads which most of us do

You can go to dedicated messaging apps (Ex: Discord) to talk to them. Not the forums that are dedicated to Terraria, not being a messaging application.

You have the freedom to post practically anywhere on the forum. You're more than welcome to @ any of your friends in a thread to get their attention or discuss between yourselves to chat in "Random Chitchat" or "Last Post Wins".

Had you not been involved in current conversations totalling over 15,000 (which again, we deemed as a respectable limit for the average active user) then you would be able to privately message friends as well. We haven't stopped anyone from talking to their friends. The forum is here and you have full access to it, if you've got any threads bans in areas you would like to talk then please approach the staff about it - there shouldn't be any problem with you posting on those threads so long as you follow the forum rules.

I'm not even opposed to the idea of having a couple more chat threads if that would make people happier, but thats a discussion for the staff if it comes up as a compromise that people want to explore.

There is a difference between openly talking in a public thread and privately chatting in a private conversation. That fact that you mods assume that 15000 messages is a respectable amount of messages to talk to a friend is bizzare to me. If you find a true friend you are going to talk to them a lot.

If you find a true friend, you should be able to communicate with them on a dedicated messaging website. And plus, the mods assumed a perfectly reasonable limit, which should take months or even years to reach in a normal conversation.

If you read my other post then you know that I can’t. And a lot of others can’t. Not every has nice parents that let them do anything

Yup, and kicking people off to go elsewhere is simply... not a good idea, as now they and possibly their friends kick off the negative feedback loop.

Then again, even counting average active playerbase, there's also people not using conversations much or at all, so that also skews the average down.
I'd say, probably a better idea would be to check for active people who have at least 1000 conversation messages, and average that to find the true average of conversation-heavy base.

You are able to - and should feel able to talk to your friends in a public thread; you can save the more private (but still rule-abiding) matters for conversations. As said before a forum really isn't a private chatroom for your friends and it should not be treated or taken as such. If you feel like you cannot talk to your friends in public then I'm all ears, it is the staffs goal to make the forum a safe place and if you feel that's not the case then we'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

And even people that are allowed might not want to go on more than one social media platform at once.
Like me; I want to be able to use TCF for all of my social media purposes, but I've had to use Discord as well and I don't like that.

there ain’t a huge active user base though. So 5% is still really bizarre. I’ll change mine to a 50% because that’s what it seems like just reading this thread which is a huge amount of the active fan base

Most users just post maybe once a day as there are the suggestions people and the forum game/ roleplayers. Personally if you're going to roleplay do it in the correct area. Now anyway back to ignoring your existence.

As we have seen lots of the role players pms are full

think about this, you are out drinking coffee and talking to your friend, and 4 people surround you and are staring at you and listening to you
