In the chest was a godly starfury...I managed to build a makeshift cloud "ladder" placing 3 cloud blocks down, mining 2, placing 2 more down, etc..until I finally reached the ground and crafted a bed.

Cool. You should go kill skeletron with it (that's what I did when I found a starfury early on)

I would..but this was supposed to be a mage playthrough...sooo....

Even if it didnt have a horseshoe, you could just make the water fall off the side and make a temporary parachute landing
