I'm actually more concerned about hunger rather than the cold. I've already obtained a winter hat and a thermal stone. I'm not running RoG for the run, so ideas for food are limited. It'd been suggested that I use bird traps, but I have no idea if there are other ways. I think Deerclops(?) might still be a threat, and I don't know how to deal with that

Birbs are unlimited to get, but it's faster to kill some monsters for meat in vanilla game.
Granger
Penguins make for a easy meat source. Since they run JUST enough to not touch you, shove one away from the camp, and kill him. Then return and repeat. Just watch out for when they got eggs because then they're aggressive. Always remember: dont atk them if theres other penguins around, or your death shall be swift.
