For me, every single time, in an attempt to avoid spending half an hour placing platforms, I just try to get the Terraspark Boots so I can walk on lava. And that takes several hours so it's really not more efficient..

Yeah, waterwalking helps too. As long as doesn't happen the slope bug where the character submerges in the lava, heh.
