Same here actually, but I think I know why.
When you look at the color spectrum, white is an absence of color, and so is black really, hence why space is black.
But, when you look at a light spectrum, white is all the colors combined. I think blue, red, and green is for the light spectrum, and blue, red, and yellow is for solid colors.
Most likely whoever said "RBG are the three primaries" was colorblind. Or some 'scientist' trying to be a rebel by stating something similar to "2+2=6"
