Do you consider it a stationary summoning weapon, a la the Crystal Staff or Staff of the Frost Hydra, or a merely a magic weapon that summons a stationary "projectile"?

Magic. I'd think most stationary summoning weapons are turrets. Clinger staff certainly doesn't shoot.

summoner you only spend the mana once for a minion like creature
NOT the clinger staff it's magic like the nimbus rod

Not true of the stationary summoning weapons, actually. They hang around for a bit, then vanish, yet are still consdering summoning staves unambiguously. The nimbus rod is another one that's considered a summoning weapon by some, a magic weapon by others.

The pillar disappears after a few hits anyways. Its a shame, really. It had potential. The items from the Corrupt Mimics are really lack luster.

The Chain Guillotine is awesome, though.

sounds like we're not going with damage type(whats buffed by summon gear)...in that case:
since classed playthroughs are playerside(not actually part of the game's mechanics) to begin with and you're *already* fudging the rules for the clouds let alone the direct damage thorns spells I'd say they're whatever you want them to be if you want to consider it summoner enough for your "summoner" go right ahead:p
(even if you want the beegun or ghost/bat staff or whatever, its all in your head so pick whats fun, even edit in hackedstacks of fireflys to light caverns if you like)
