Good morning everyone!

With Console 1.3 finally out to the community, we noticed a good number of issues and areas of confusion that people were having. Some of this is just adjusting to the new way that things work and then there are definitely some nasty bugs/issues out there in spite of all the testing done beforehand. Rest assured that the team is investigating and attacking those issues as quickly as possible. Any workarounds here are not intended to substitute for real fixes - they are just here to help keep you in the game while those are in process. :)

The good news is that there are some workarounds and the like for many of these, and this thread will serve as a one-stop-shop for those as they come in (rather than making people look through pages of threads or posting the same info over and over). So, check back here often for new information!

LEGACY SAVE CONVERSION CRASH/HANGUP
PS4 ONLY:

If your game is crashing or hanging up during the legacy save conversion process, the team has discovered a workaround that is effective for the majority of players. It is important to note that you can only download saves uploaded after the latest PS3 version patch. Please make sure that you follow these steps precisely and do not skip anything.
  1. PS4 Settings -> Application Saved Data Management -> Saved Data in System Storage -> Upload the SYSTEM file (Select Terraria) to the cloud or USB drive (as a backup)
  2. Delete the SYSTEM file in the System Storage (keep the USB/Cloud Backup)
  3. Restart the game.
Do let us know if this does or does not work for you as it helps inform the eventual fix.

XBOX ONE ONLY:

Some people are getting a long hang-up in converting legacy worlds, even those who do not have legacy worlds to convert.
If you have no legacy worlds and find yourself in this situation, or it seems to be taking an excessively long time your saves (say, longer than 30 minutes), them you might try this temporary workaround:

SENDING YOUR SAVE FILES IS A TREMENDOUS HELP (PS4 ONLY)

As we mentioned above a lot of the issues reported were not encountering by our testing. Sending us a copy of your saved data helps us reproduce these issues and can help us pinpoint the differences that may be causing these issues. If you’re encountering issues please use the instructions below to send us your save data.

User Instructions:

1. Insert a formatted USB stick into any open USB port on your console. For each console, follow these instructions, where ‘save data’ means your Terraria saves:

2. Once your save data is copied to the USB drive, insert the drive into your PC. Take the ‘PS4’ folder and compress it using your favorite file compression program.

3. Go tohttps://uploadfiles.io/Upload your file (we encourage using a .zip file) Once it has successfully uploaded click “Share By Email” Enter [email protected] as the “TO” address.

4. One last thing before you hit “Send”. Please include your email address in the note field as well as an overview of the issue you’re encountering. This will allow us to tie it to specific bugs that are being reported through our bug support form. Please be as specific as you can, and also include your PSN name so we can match it up with any bugs that have been reported in other channels. We may reach out to you for additional details.

Display Settings (Cut Off UI or Black Bars)

Are certain elements of the user interface cut off? Are you seeing black bars? We may be able to help.

PS4

PS4 Settings (OS) ---> Sound & Screen ---> Display Area Settings

Xbox One

By default Xbox One doesn’t support an option to change this within the system settings. People have had success adjusting the aspect ratio settings on their television sets. We would recommend modifying the aspect ratio of your TV to find a setting that works for you. On older televisions there may be an option called “Just Scan” that can be toggled to fix the issue as well.

Different models of TVs will call these settings by various names - "Picture size" and "Aspect Ratio" are common. The option value you want should be something like 'Just Scan'.

CANNOT MAP ITEMS TO D-PAD
This is actually off in the default controller scheme. However, you can toggle this back on by going to the following:

  • Open the Menu, select the Controls option, and scroll down to "Quick Navigation"
  • There is an option labeled "Directional Buttons Hotbar" on PS4 and "D-Pad Hotbar" on Xbox One. To activate this option, you want to click on it and make sure the circle next to it is solid white.
  • To assign items to the D-Pad once this is done, open your inventory and select the item in game, and press the D-Pad button you want to use as a shortcut for that item
  • Images in the spoiler below show this process

HOW DO I ZOOM WITH NO TOUCHPAD ZOOMING? (PS4 ONLY)
In the current build, Zoom is accessible by going to Options and then use R2 and L2 to zoom in/out to your preference.

I SPAWNED AND MY CHARACTER IS FROZEN AND MADE OF STONE
This is certainly one of the more crazy bugs we have ever seen - however, there is a way to save your character from their stony fate:

  • To fix this, your character needs to be killed in game. Once you respawn, save & exit, this should clear up this bug for good on that character.
  • How you do this is up to you, though for those players that spawned into a giant home base where spawns are rare and you have tons of NPCs to protect you, that may be difficult.
  • If this is your situation, we suggest making a new world, taking that character into that new world, removing all of your armor, and letting the slime horde (or zombies at night) kill you off.
  • Again, after you die and respawn, things should be cleared up for that character.
Alternatively, we have heard from players that this effect wears off in 5-10 minutes if you would rather just wait it out.

HOW DO I CANCEL A BUFF/PET/ETC.?
Folks have had trouble sorting this out - so here is how to do it!

  • Open your inventory
  • Press R1 to cycle to the armor/ accessories section
  • Click x on the grappling hook icon 'Equipment'
  • At the bottom of this menu should be buff icons, highlight the one you want to cancel and click x to get rid of it.
Step-by-step images of this are in the spoiler below:

CONSOLE MULTIPLAYER MAP OVERWRITE WORKAROUND
Currently, there is a bug on PS4 & XB1 that can cause the host's map save to overwrite your own (causing you to lose your world in the process). Below is an update on the fix for this as well as a workaround that appears to be highly effective

  • We have a fix for it that was put in (although not before this RC was submitted to cert), but an intrepid dev at Pipeworks has found a workaround for people until we get that patch in:

  • The bug should be 100% avoidable until the patch goes in by taking the following steps:
    • Restarting the application before joining a multiplayer game.
    • In other words, if you're playing already on one of your own maps and want to join a friend's game, instead of just backing out to the menu and joining from there, close Terraria completely and restart it before joining.
    • This should keep your existing maps from getting overwritten until the fix we have goes live
divider.png

BACKING UP GAMES TO THE CLOUD ON XBOX ONE

  • Unlike PlayStation 4, XBox One does not allow for USB save transfers. The only option for backing up your game saves is to utilize Microsoft's Cloud storage via XBox Live. Pipeworks encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with the way to do this via the link below - just in case something bad happens to your local data.

PROJECTILES ARE VANISHING
  • If you find that projectiles (weapon projectiles, grappling hooks, fishing lines) are going invisible, a workaround is to avoid using dyes until it can be fixed

CHESTS RAPIDLY OPENING/CLOSING
  • If you open a chest and close it, only to find that it immediately opens again, try switching from manual cursor mode to automatic cursor mode

WHAT HAPPENS TO CONSOLE-EXCLUSIVE ITEMS?

As previous explained, some console-exclusive items are being removed or are changing.

What is changing?
  • Current Console Exclusive armors will remain in game, but will be converted to vanity sets. These will be available via the Traveling Merchant's rotating inventory.
    • Currently-owned sets will still exist, but will automatically be changed to Vanity.
  • Current Console Exclusive weapons will be removed from the game entirely.
    • Currently-owned weapons will be automatically replaced with similar gear at the Chlorophyte tier (i.e. Tonbogiris will be replaced with Chlorophyte Partisans)
    • Sharanga will be replaced with Hellwing Bow and Spectral Arrows/Vulcan Bolts with Hellfire/Chlorophyte arrows, respectively
  • Console-Exclusive mobs will be removed in their entirety.
    • Most of these were reskins/recolors that do not fit into vision and balance of the game. There is a chance that a few of the more interesting will be revisited at a later date.
  • Console Vanity will be removed from the game, with the exception of the Horned God set. This will be added to the Traveling Merchant's inventory.
  • Sparkly Wings will be removed from the game
    • Currently-owned Sparkly Wings will be replaced by Cenx's Wings.
  • Console-exclusive Pets will be removed from the game
    • Currently-owned exclusive pets will be replaced with a gold bunny each. Feel free to sell him for 10g or put it in your very own bunny cage to replace that pet companionship.
    • There is a chance that a few of these will be revisited at a later date and re-added to the game with revamped art and/or AI.

Also as previously announced, Ocram will be removed from the game as of 1.3.

What about Ocram?
You will have noticed that Ocram was missing from our list above. Well, to be honest, we have never felt Ocram was a good fit or a really engaging boss fight. So, we are afraid that Ocram will be leaving us once the Terraria Console 1.3 update arrives.

Ocram Changes

  • Ocram and his related mobs and summons will be removed from the game.
  • Ocram Mask and Trophy will remain in the game as "legacy" items. Any that exist at the update will remain, but there will be no further way to obtain them in game once the update arrives.
  • Souls of Blight will be removed from the game
  • Players will receive 5g for each Soul of Blight owned (the current sell price of Souls of Blight)

WHY NO 1.3 UPDATES FOR OLDER CONSOLES?
It was announced in July 2016 that there would be no further updates for older-generation console devices. This applies to
  • Xbox 360
  • PlayStation 3
  • PS Vita
  • Wii U
  • 2DS/3DS (including newer models)
That announcement (again, from July 2016):
OLD GEN CONSOLES
What’s happening with old-gen?
  • Engine Software is currently working on an update that will be focused on clearing out the most impactful bugs that our QA and/or Re-Logic QA have been able to uncover - along with keeping close track with anything that the Community has raised. This will encompass over 100 fixes in total. If you have any major items in particular that you would like to inquire about, please let us know.

  • This update will unfortunately be the final update for PS3, XB360, and PS Vita

  • Targeted release timeframe is September 2016

  • The great news is that you can continue to play these versions of Terraria (both online and offline) as a fully functioning – and still incredibly fun – game.
    • No further updates will be coming for old gen
    • Current-Gen consoles (XB1, PS4) will continue to receive updates (more on that below)
    • Future updates to current-gen platforms will unfortunatelty make cross-play with old-gen platforms impossible
divider.png

Why are we no longer providing updates for old-gen?

  • Simply put, these consoles are 12 years old at this point, and we are running into hardware requirement issues (as some of you saw with Vita): as Terraria has grown over the years, its hardware demands have as well – with 1.3 being a sizeable jumping-off point. This also means that we would likely have to substantially "hold back" current gen possibilities in order to make things work with the "lowest common denominator."

  • So, that being the case and in order to continue to give all users the best Terraria experience, we needed to draw a line here that allows old gen players to have a stable and authentic game experience – even if that means being stopped at 1.2.4 tier content – while also enabling current gen consoles to fully leverage their more current hardware.

  • We explored a few possible approaches to make 1.3 work, but – to be frank – none of them were really acceptable. They required too much in the way of compromising the Terraria console gameplay experience and still left some lingering stability concerns, all while drawing in a rather large amount of resources to make it work at all – resources that we ultimately feel would be better used to push Terraria forward further and faster.

The limiting factor for these older devices is the primarily the amount of RAM they have, which is fixed at 512MB or less (and even less than that amount is available for use by any game). Terraria - as designed - tends to use a great amount of RAM, and with the vastly increased size of content for 1.3, these devices simply cannot support an adequate, stable environment for Terraria to run. The minimum amount of RAM recommended for the PC version is 2.5GB of RAM, and most modern mobile phones/tablets have at least 1GB of RAM. By comparison, XBox One/PS4 consoles have 8GB RAM, or 16x the amount of their predecessor models. The Switch has 4GB of RAM.

While Nintendo continues to produce and sell new 2DS/3DS models, they have not changed the basic hardware architecture for them, and these new models still have only 128MB of RAM and 6MB VRAM for the display. It still does not support pixel shading which is the requirement for features like dyes in the game.

Please do not confuse the amount of RAM with the amount of HDD space or internal flash storage - they are not the same thing. None of these devices can be upgraded in terms of RAM.

It would certainly be a great thing if owners of these older devices could enjoy the experiences of 1.3, but the developers have explored all available approaches and have found no viable solutions.

WHEN WILL THE SWITCH/MOBILE 1.3 VERSIONS BE AVAILABLE?

Once the current 1.3 version has been stabilized for PS4/XB1, Pipeworks will turn their full attention to the Switch and Mobile versions for 1.3. They have already said that they have had people working with those platforms before now, but with a stable core codebase in place, they can begin to work in earnest.

The original plan has been to have the Switch and Mobile versions ready 3-6 months after the PS4/XB1 release. Please note that this is an estimate, not a promise or guarantee. The goal is a stable, playable release, not an arbitrary date. There will be more news in the coming weeks and months as to the progress on these versions. We have no pricing information for the Switch version at this time.

We do not know at this time what mobile device specifications will be required for Terraria 1.3 and beyond. We think it is safe to say that at a minimum 1GB RAM will be required; we do not know if that will go higher. Most newer mobile devices should have 1GB or more of RAM.

If your device is older - say, 3-4 years old - the version of OS that is supported for that device may not be able to run 1.3. Mobile devices have relatively short support cycles from manufacturers as compared to PCs and Consoles; that is the business model for that segment of electronics. We cannot say at this time which devices or OS versions will be supported.

If you are unsure of your device's specifications, here are a couple of links that should help you find them:

https://www.phonearena.com/
https://www.gsmarena.com/

Please note that internal/external flash storage is NOT the same thing as (or a substitute for) RAM (a crucial element for Terraria support).
The forum staff cannot generally tell you anymore about your device than the sites above can, please do not pester them with questions about that. We cannot tell you if your specific device will be able to run Terraria 1.3.

On the bright side - your previous mobile purchase should be transferable to a new device if you sign into the same mobile appstore account. You should not be required to purchase the game app again from the same appstore.
