Crates Fishing (for hardmode ore)

Righty, yesterday my PC character Alyssa summoned all her courage, took a deep breath — plus Bee Armor and an Imp staff, a Guide Voodoo Doll, several hundred Beenades, a Diamond Staff, a Demon Scythe, and enough potions to float a battleship — then rode Hellevator 4 West down to the two-layered ice-and-ash Hellbridge (ice on top for speed, ash beneath to keep WoF's vulnerable areas in convenient positions).

I then totally forgot to chug the potions before invoking WoF. No need, as it turned out. I was surprised how easy it was to beat the large, squishy boss. Laser Rifle, yay! Pwnhammer went into a Chest, since I don't intend to smash any altars on Thisbe. Then I opened the big chest of Crates and started unpacking. Holy corrupt mackerel, there were a lot of them!

I'm pleased to report that my spreadsheet was off on nearly every item. Pleased because what I got was MUCH more than expected. Here are the results. Due to less-than-perfectly-organized temporary storage I might have missed some Lesser Mana Potions. % Pred shows what percentage of my predicted loot count I actually got.

In addition to the items below I got about 45 platinum worth of gold and silver coins — twice what I'd predicted. My first hardmode Blood Moon interrupted the opening ceremony, putting the money count off by a little, so I omitted coins from the table.

Made a full set of Titanium Armor and a Titanium Pickaxe, stashed the rest away in color-coded Chests. Potions are still in extra chests I set up just for the Big Unpacking event; there are so many I doubt I'll ever use a tenth of the haul.

In conclusion I confirm that fishing for Crates is not just a viable technique, it's Super Effective!

Now back to cutting a clear zone around the new Crimson and Hallow zones. Goes a lot faster now. Faithful old Legendary Reaver Shark, thanks for your long service.

Hey, congrats. That's quite an impressive haul. I'm sure it'll make the transition to hardmode fairly painless. Now don't forget about that Adamantium castle. ;)

Thanks! Even with the new gear I've got killed a few times so I'll have to adjust my playing style. Once I've isolated the two "growth zones" I'll see about some conspicuous consumption on an epic scale.

This methodical approach to a playthrough is my kind of style and I love hearing the results of your crate opening party.

Interesting results that differ from your spreadsheet expectations. Gold Bars and Healing Potions (not of the Lesser or Greater variety) were right on and nearly everything else was like it was in super-bonus mode.

Curious which weapon you are using now? You've got full Titanium armor and a Titanium pickaxe, did you make any weapons from your haul? Or is it Laser Rifle for now?

You will have to smash one demon altar to summon the mechanical bosses.
I've summoned and defeated all three mech bosses multiple times (been beaten a few times too). Never smashed a single altar. Now I'm finding Plantera's Bulbs… and leaving them undisturbed for the time being.

Thanks! I kept using my Night's Edge, bought a tome to make Golden Shower, earned some Hallowed Bars, made a stack of Light Discs, and crafted the Terra Blade soon as I'd got enough Broken Hero Swords. I also grabbed a Megashark and made heaps of Crystal Bullets, without which I'd not have finished off Skeletron Prime before morning.

Fortunately I kept having Solar Eclipses every few days, so I was able to stock up on goodies while developing improved fighting techniques.

I also crafted a Hallowed Repeater but haven't been using it much. Stacks and stacks of arrows sit unused in a chest at the base. "Traitor!" they accuse me. "Call yourself an archer? Soon as you get a game with free arrows and super bows, what do you do? Go all magical on us. Hmph."

Bringing up this oldish thread to submit my own crate opening party results. ~:)

Because of this thread I decided to make my 1.3 world a fishing-based playthrough with the intent to not smash any demon altars. I did quests as daily as I could, focused on using fishing potions, sonar potions and crate potions. I did open crates as I caught them - up until I had everything I needed (double jump, boots, reaver shark, etc), then I started saving them for hardmode.

I went into hardmode with 52 Gold, 204 Iron and 397 Wooden Crates.

I was very pleased to move straight into Titanium Armor and I made Titanium Sword after Titanium Sword until I crafted one with an acceptable modifier.

After opening all my crates I've since moved away from fishing and have changed the playthrough to be a must-get-all-boss-drops-and-trophy-before-moving-on-to-the-next-boss playthrough. So, a Grinding playthrough? Ha! But I loved not having to smash any altars and have enjoyed not having Hallow and Crimson in places that I don't expect it to be. I do believe that I will always get my hardmode ores from crates instead of altars going forward. It suits my play style very well. `;)
