What he was getting at is that if they turned on when it "technically" turned to night, they would be able to double as nighttime mob detectors. Basically, one way they're good for shutting doors and activating traps when zombies come out, and the other way they're good for turning on lights when it gets dark. It all depends on which you would want them to be used for.
