You do realize we discuss Terraria here, right? Devoting many hours into repetitive tasks to get one item is right at home in this game. The meaning of the tasks is whatever meaning you assign to it. Players are free to make their own challenges, even if they're boring as hell to everyone else, and they hardly need a reason for it.

Questions like this hardly have a place in gaming unless they're a reaction to something imposed by the developers.

You should try it. It's surprisingly enjoyable with the new mining mount.

I went to test it on a new world and before I realized it, a big chunk of it was gone. It has a "just a few more" thing going for it.
