Hi @origami, since you are not really working on a mod in progress, and are just trying to gather ideas for a mod, I moved this to General Mod Discussion.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
Extinction mode: upon the defeat of like plantera or something, the bringer of doom is dropped. During extinction mode, less passive entities and more hostile ones. Background changes to a meteor storm and trees look dead. All NPCs die instantly except for the Dryad.
Bringer of doom: Looks like a coin, and when held for the first time, the screen glows white (like start of moon lord fight) and extinction mode starts.
Extinction Dryad: Upon clicking on her, she tells you that you need to re-purify the world, and that you are Terraria’s last hope. You need to save Terraria. She sells you 4 free items - the Final Breath, Seed of Hope, Solemn Oath, and the Last Words. If you buy them, she dies.
Seed of Hope: Resummons the Dryad, can only be used when the Extinction mode is over.
Bottle of Purity: Made from various Extinction mod boss drops, re-purifies the world.
Final Breath, Solemn Oath, and Last Words: Perhaps powerful weapons which have cool properties like weakening enemies or something.
Petal Kunai: Possible drop from Plantera, rapidly fires the kunai and cursor location.
Mourning Mortar: New enemy for the Pumpkin Moon event. Fires Greek fire into the air, and is immobile.
Messenger of Extinction: Sword made from the Bringer of Doom and various Extinction Mod enemy drops?

sounds good
but the killing npcs might be a bit hard also what about the witch doctor he comes after you kill plantera and the nurse should probably stay as she can heal herself and it would be a bit too hard without her

Oil Lantern: Summons a pet candle. (light pet) 1% drop rate from mourning mortars.
Enchanted broomstick: infinite fly time, but does not move too fast. Negates fall damage. Dropped by mourning wood.
Turner of Tides: Very fast knife throwing weapon.
Helix Halberd: Acts like North Pole.
Battle Horn: Gives the player the buff called “adrenaline.” Adrenaline increases atk dmg and atk spd. Afterwards, player receives adrenaline sickness.
Decimated Clump: First boss of the Extinction Mod. Looks like a purple clump of fused corrupters with eyes and teeth all over it. It has 64,000 hitpoints, but is fairly weak. (Low damage) In its first form, it moves slowly and fires nothing but tiny projectiles. Enters second form at 42,000 and enters third form at 10,000. In second form, it will start teleporting, shoot fireballs, and its eyes become bloodshot. In third form, it looks like the boss is splitting apart and is held together by sticky strands. It will continue doing what it used to, as well as occasionally charging at the player and spinning. It is summoned when a bait enemy is killed. This enemy will respawn but there will only be one in the world at a time.
Catastrophic Meteor: After the Decimated Clump is defeated, a catastrophic meteor will land. “A catastrophic meteor has landed!”
Heavy Lazer Cannon: Fires a huge yellow bean similar to the one on the Martian saucer. Dropped by the Martian saucer. Significant recoil.
Crystal Ring: Drops from the pirates. When you are damaged, 3 crystal shards shoot come out of you.
Some kind of big Pinky version: When defeated, splits into mini pinkies. Extinction mode only. Drops pink gel.
Wildbloom: Fires six pink projectiles outwards in all directions. Magic weapon.
Overgrowth: Fires a homing wide turning vine projectile, inflicts tangled debuff.
Tangled debuff: Decreasese movement speed and does damage equal to poison.

New Boss Concept:
The ocean biome is brighter, and is full of kelp and coral. But, the ocean biome is also deeper. During the extinction mode, to halt non extinction boss progression, Fishron will not spawn in when the truffle worm is used. (Golem can still be summoned, as the early Extinction can be somewhat challenging, and Golem gear can help) The deepest parts are nearly pitch black, and sustain no kelp or coral or any type of enemy. This area is called the Midnight Zone. Only one thing is there, which is called the Bioluminscent Orb. It only has 3000 hitpoints. However, if you kill the orb, the boss fight begins. Two enemies, The Bobbit and The Lure are summoned. The Lure stays horizontal with the player, shoots lasers, and occasionally charges to the other side of the player. The Bobbit has two forms, in its first form, it simply acts like a standard worm. In its second form, it looks like it’s cracking, and it begins to summon Bobbit Parasites as minions. Bobbit Parasite: To make things short, they act like leeches. It will also move faster, forcing the player to really get their hands on the keyboard. Combined with the attacks of the Lure, this boss is quite difficult. Since the ocean is relatively large, you will have plenty of room for movement or an arena. During the entire fight, you will have the marine nostalgia debuff, which makes it so you lose massive amounts of hitpoints of you attempt to leave the Midnight Zone.
Lore: After the Bringer of Doom activated, a worm, perhaps one of the giant worms you encountered while mining found its way into the depths of the ocean. Due to some phenomenon caused by the Extinction, the worm grew rapidly. It adapted, and became a Bobbit worm. It soon found that it could easily catch and kill Fishrons, which also dwelled in the deep sea. Soon, terrified by the Bobbit, the FIshrons were forced to leave the high pressure and adapt to a higher level of the ocean. The Bobbit then slowly starved. As it layed there in the sand, another deep dwelling creature took pity on it. Now, they work together, the Lure attracts any unsuspecting organism, and then, the Bobbit devours it. Apparently, the fishrons are still in hiding, and wouldn’t dare touch even a truffle worm, fearing that somehow it would unleash the Bobbit once more. Perhaps, if you killed the Bobbit...

....if you killed the Bobbit, the Fishrons will return to the Midnight Zone. However, because of its strange environment, the Fishrons had to adapt, making them far stronger...
Dark Fishron
Can be spawned by fishing in the Midnight Zone (using the Truffle Worm as bait, of course)
First Phase: Similar to the normal Duke Fishron phase, except it dashes faster and deals more damage. It will also shoot out a burst of six Sharknadoes (eight homing Sharknadoes in expert mode). It will also shoot more Detonating Bubbles, the bubbles will also have 300 health (480 health in expert mode). They will also move faster.
Second Phase: It will dash even faster dealing even more damage and dashing even more often and continueous. Its projectile that will start a Cthulhunado will move even faster. Its Cthulhunadoes will also have twice the length and will have an infinite height (meaning the only way to avoid them is by going under), it will also shoot even more Sharknadoes (homing Sharknadoes in expert mode), hitting them will also deal more damage (if in expert mode, the damage dealt will be 50% of the player's health).
Third Phase (No longer expert mode): Similar to the third phase of normal Duke Fishron, except its eyes will be 25% more transparent (completely invisible in expert mode), it will also have an even shorter pause (no pause at all in expert mode). It will also dash three times instead of one.

Plantation, the Astronomical Calamity
Has four phases which it constantly switches through:
Defence form: Defence reaches crazy amounts, things like the terra blade deal only five damage. It summons minions such as Minors, Compressed Supernovas, and White Dwarfs.
Minor: A weak enemy which acts like a faster, smaller, meteor head.
White Dwarf: Stationary emery which shoots tiny lasers. Quite weak.
Compressed Supernovas: Charge quickly towards the player continuously. Explodes on contact. Somewhat low HP, and is meant to be the heavy hitter out of all of Planetation’s minions.
Mage form: Takes a humanoid shape, sprite is similar to the dark mage. It fires fireballs, lightning, and ice things like the lunatic cultist.
Slime form: Takes the form of a huge slime. It is pink and yellow. It will hop around and teleport.
Roller form: Rolls up into a ball, and grows spikes. Planetation will then roll towards the player. In this phase, it cannot cross six or more block high walls.
Lore (ish) : Planetation is simply an error in the code of the universe. It is said to have grown from a single called organism on a comet, feeding on stardust and other beings which lurk through space. When that meteor struck terraria, beginning the “Extinction”, Planetation was unleashed. Now you, the player, must stop it.
Drops: 35-40 astrum ingots. 20% for the planetary pummeler. 20% for the neutron star. 20% fir the superstar 20% for the supernova 20% for... NOTHING>:D In Expert Mode, it drops the Extraterrestrial Debries, which increases fall speed, CRIT chance, and increases defence by two.

Changes to the dungeon: It is now darker, but includes plasm torches, which glow brightly with a harsh eerie blue light. From the dungeon spirit, you now have a 2% drop rate for an item called the necrotalisman, which increases summoning space by two.

From the Bobbit and Lure: Marine Rod which summons various fish summons in a certain order. (flying fish, clownfish, tuna, lure, salmon, bobbit)
Chum: summons a pet The Lure which is a light pet. Also drops the biolumiscent fishing pole, which is a great fishing pole. I don’t really have ideas for weapon drops so yea maybe someone can help with that.

I said earlier that NPCs all die during the Extinction. Not anymore, they just all disappear. You can regain some of the important ones by doing certain tasks. All NPCs return upon the defeat of the final boss. The merchant returns once the Geletain Cube miniboss is defeated.

Like I said earlier, during extinction, vanilla boss progression will come to a halt, forcing the player to complete the mod. The lunatic cultist servant dudes will NOT spawn in the dungeon, until the final boss of this mod is destroyed. Once the lunatic cultist is defeated, a new NPC will move in.
Plague Seer: The new NPC which will spawn somewhere in the normal forest biome. If there is none due to corruption, the NPC will spawn in the dungeon. He sells the lunatic cultist's "drops" indirectly. 10 gold for each of the following weapons. Shockwave Gauntlet: Uses no mana, fires semi-homing fire balls. Explodes with a non block destroying blast upon contact with an enemy. Frostflake Tome: Uses about as much mana as the razorblade typhoon, and fires the ice snowflakes which the lunatic cultist fires. Phantasm staff: A summon weapon which summons a phantasm dragon like the stardust dragon staff.

Special “ancient” weapons are added. (Weapons made from the supreme catalyst item)
Honey cutter: deals 109 damage, greatly slows enemy movement speed, only a few enemies/bosses are immune. It has slow swing speed, and is created from the bee keeper and the supreme catalyst.
