Recently, there has been an influx of posts about a specific crash that occurs whenever you press Single Player, or any of the Multiplayer options. This crash causes a window to appear with the following error:

In the majority of cases, this crash is caused by OneDrive syncing the Terraria saves folder. To solve this issue, you must disable this syncing. Here is how:

  1. Find the OneDrive Icon in your task bar and right-click it.

  2. A window will pop up. Click the gear in the top right corner, then click Settings.

  3. A new window will pop up. On the Account tab, press the Choose folders button.

  4. Yet another window will pop up. In the file tree, find Documents/My Games/Terraria and uncheck it.

  5. Wait a moment to allow OneDrive to sync its changes, then start Terraria. The game should work as expected now!

Same error. Had onedrive, but not signed in. Uninstalled one drive, same error. Restarted. Attempted with steam cloud on and off. Attempted reinstalling, same error. Attempted deleting and removing local files, same error. No google drive installed. Same error.

Used to have mods, but was starting this after removing local files and not subscribed to any mods currently when attempting steps.

Are you getting an identical error message? Could you post it here?

I deleted OneDrive on my PC and still keep getting the same error message. I'm wondering if there's a way to just hard reset the actual files for the game I have so I can have a clean slate and hopefully the game doesn't pull the error again.

I just re-installed the game from Steam to get the error. Just got the error just now when trying to address it now. Just thought to update the thread.

Do you have Players or Worlds folders in there?
Yes, both folders are in there. Players has my name, with a .plr and .plr.bak file. Within the file itself for my name, it's a long string with a box that looks like an archive box.

Within Worlds folder is the following:
The_Basic_Slope_of_Slime.wld
The_Basic_Slope_of_Slime.wld.bak
The_Basic_Slope_of_Slime.wld.bac2

I've also ran integrity of game files with no issue.

Edit: I took the files from the Player folder and the Worlds folder, put them in a sub folder outside of My Documents/My Games/Terraria and booted it as a test. It's loaded into character creation.

So it seems either there's something about an old file that was maybe archived that wasn't playing nice with either newer version of Terraria. I think it's safe to say I can delete them, as both character and world successfully created it. For others, try move it into a subfolder first and see if that makes a difference.

I was looking at the steam files, I totally forgot there were the local document files within Documents for games, too. That suggestion help tons! I can actually play now.
