Switch issue joining and hosting multiplayer games on switch. pls help

i’ve been trying to join my friends world on multiplayer all day and it has not worked no matter what we have tried. we play on switch and we have both reset our internet, our switch, and tried to connect to a different internet but nothing has worked. we both have active nintendo online memberships and have our switches up to date as far as i know. i’ve also tried getting them to join one of my worlds instead of me joining theirs and that didn’t work either. i am so confused as to what is causing this can someone please offer some advice or somewhere where i could find help with this. thanks.
