So I am not sure if something like this has been suggested, or if it could be done.
But I'd like to propose sometime during Terraria's development that if items could have interchangeable stats for every item in-game. And would switch around when either PVP and PVE.
When in PVE, they would retain their original stats for a normal game experience. And when in a PVP session, they change to stats more balanced for Player Vs. Player session.
The moment any player switches to either pvp or pve, the items they have equipped or have on them would interchange to their respective stats for the session. It would also make it easy for players who'd like a PVP only server to carefully balance stats towards a combat style they would like other players to use more easily.
When ever we get new content in or out, we have to balance it for both PVE and PVP use. It would be nice if they could have two interchangeable stat profiles for when this comes around, so some weapons, armor, accessories, etc could remain very useful in PVE. Instead of being balanced out to the point that it takes a bit more effort to use them or so much (I.E. During Moon events), especially if there will ever be any items meant to be outrageously powerful and would be unfair in PVP, this would be a handy mechanism for knocking down even a Powerful or OP item for PVP use.

- (WIP)
- Weapons, accessories, armor and other gear that will be used in PVP would be nerfed. So there isn't anything to worry about exploitation.
- Some gear can remain as they originally were without having to tweak them so they could be used for PVP and PVE at the same time, since their statistics will change when switching between Co-op and PVP mode.
