The current endgame armor is lacking in any variety other than classes. If it worked like shroomite does with different helmets giving different benefits more attention (example: damage, armor)
 
Why not make three of each price of armor for all classes. Three vortex helmets, three chest armor ect...
each combination could have a special set bonus and perk making more customizable loadouts

To spend that much time polishing the post-game would be questionable, especially as that time could be used to focus on areas of the game that are lacking in content. I don't personally see why the post-game would need to have that much custom selection when there is no post-game challenge that would require us to have it.

The reason it's lacking in variety is because armor which lets you use a diverse amount of options is just straight up stronger than specialized armor, especially considering weapons like the Celebration, SDMG, and Phantasm are all good items and to be limited to just one is pretty awful.

Specialized armor doesn't mean that it would trap one in a single weapon type. Beetle armor would be more resembling of that with the choice between more attack power or more defensive capability. I agree that being stuck in one weapon group isn't that fun.
