It is preferable to back-up player and world data to the cloud compared to moving data to the cloud, then deleting it from local storage. The relatively small space taken up by keeping redundant data on local storage (Only about a dozen megabytes per world on systems with hundreds or thousands of gigabytes) and the issues caused by deleting it after moving it to the cloud (losing worlds, minimap data, etc.) means that it is better to use the cloud storage as a back-up and for syncing data between systems (etc. playing the same world/character on Desktop and Steam Deck).

The 'cloud' is not intended to be a backup system; it is only intended to be used to sync between devices so that you can play in multiple locations.

If somehow your local data gets corrupted (as is possible with a power outage while playing), then the cloud version will also be corrupted as soon as it syncs.

A proper backup would be to make copies of the data in a different location. A tool such Game Save Manager can be useful to automate that process.
