Sprites The Wildfire, a Fiery Counterpart to Rain

Terraricanth

Official Terrarian
Hey all! Been some time, hasn't it?
Here's an idea I've had on the backburner for some time.

When careless adventurers leave open flames unchecked, it can quickly escalate into a dangerous Wildfire. Some creatures are forced from their homes, others wait it out, yet others use the opportunity to run wild. Can you handle the heat?

The Wildfire is an event that first happens post-Queen Bee. It's rarer than Rain, but by throwing the Careless Match, the event will start instantly.

carelessmatch.png

Tooltip: All it takes is just one ember...

On the left is how it looks in the inventory, on the right is how it looks when held/thrown.

Zombies and regular Skeletons (including Undead Miners) have a 25% chance to drop it after Queen Bee is defeated.
When held, it creates light similar to a Torch but with a smaller radius. When thrown on the ground, it disappears in a wisp of smoke after a few seconds, then the Wildfire starts.

Now, let's talk general changes during a Wildfire:
During a Wildfire, the screen has an orange tint.
The sky turns grey and the regular backgrounds (except for anything underground) are on fire.
The surface is lit up for the duration of the event, even at night. Even then, any lightsource using fire (such as Torches or Campfires) shines with twice the brightness.

Instead of Worms surfacing and Goldfish walking, here an occasional "Critter Stampede" happens in which multiple critters in a biome run and fly in one direction, hopping over any gaps and obstacles they can. If they can't, they flee in the other direction. These include all birds, all bugs, Turtles, Bunnies, Squirrels, Worms, Rats and their Gold variations. This only happens on the surface; Underground critters and below don't stampede. Critters who were already present before a Wildfire started will start running once it begins.

As a little Easter egg, holding out a Marshmallow on a Stick during a Wildfire will cook it as if you were holding it over a Campfire.

And lastly, a unique song plays in the background. Music for reference:

Time for the Pre-Hardmode enemies!

emberslime.png

"These slimes are melting slightly from the heat of the Wildfire. As they hop about, they leave puddles of gel that easily ignite."

Ember Slimes hop slightly faster than regular slimes. When they hop away, they leave small damaging embers in the spot they were last in; these last for 3 seconds.

Drops:
-Coins
-Gel
-Ember Slime Banner (after every 50 kills)
emberslimebanner.png

phoenix.png

"Their ability to resurrect themselves was a pain for adventurers back then, until someone found out destroying their ashes eliminated them completely."

Phoenixes fly like Flying Fish, bouncing off walls in an arc. Once the player gets close enough, they begin speeding up and releasing sparks, zooming towards the player's last location, before hitting the ground or player with a small damaging explosion and turning into a pile of ash (right of the image).

Phoenixes also turn into ash if the player kills them. After 5 seconds however, the Phoenix rises from its ashes with full health, so destroy the pile quickly.
The ash can also hurt players if it falls on top of them.

Drops:
-Coins
-Spicy Wing

-Phoenix Banner (after every 50 kills)

firemanzombies.png

"Somebody's brain could be in jeopardy, so hurry, hurry, Firefighter Zombie!"

Firefighter Zombies behave like regular Zombies, except they are immune to On Fire!.
On Expert and Master, some of them carry their Fire Axe, which is equivalent to a Zombie Arm.

Drops:
-Coins
-Shackle
-Zombie Arm
-Fire Axe

-Firefighter Helm

-Firefighter Coat

-Firefighter Galoshes

-Firefighter Zombie Banner (after every 50 kills)

blastbeetle.png

"By combining chemicals within its body, this bug creates a volatile explosion, launching projectiles from its cannon-shaped rear."

A small, yet tanky creature with a good deal of knockback resistance, and the most uncommon of the Pre-Hardmode enemies. It slowly crawls towards the player before stopping, then it turns around to blast an arcing fireball from its rear. The fireball creates a small explosion upon striking a player or surface, leaving a damaging ember that lasts for 3 seconds.

Drops:
-Coins
-2-5 Grenades
-Blast Beetle Banner (after every 50 kills)

And now the Hardmode foes:

enenra.png

"A being of pure smoke and darkness, said to only be visible to adventurers it deems worthy of fighting."

The Enenra first appears as a puff of smoke (left), drifting about and leaving smoke trails behind it. Once hit however, it changes into its humanoid form (right) and begins using Hovering AI, but it cannot phase through blocks. When the player hits it in its humanoid form, it will teleport about 7 blocks behind the player.

Drops:
-Coins
-Ash Petal

-Smokesplitter

-Enenra Banner (after every 50 kills)
enenrabanner.png

durgen.png

"A terrifying symbol of the Wildfires' hostility, these serpentine dragons historically took advantage of the event to cause mayhem."

The first Miniboss of the Wildfire, the Heatdrake hovers above you, alternating between four different attacks:
-Sweeping 70 degrees with a beam of fire from its mouth (deals On Fire! to you)
-Lunging at you
-Firing out its tail like a Harpoon, stretching out to 15 tiles at most but immediately retracts upon hitting a surface (also deals On Fire!)
-Flapping its wings rapidly, creating several small damaging embers that fall to the ground
None of these attacks go through walls, and neither does the Heatdrake itself.

Drops:
-Coins
-Cocoa
durgencoco.png

-Heatdrake's Tail
durgentail.png

-Heatdrake Banner (after every 50 kills)
durgenbanner.png

slimemom.png

"Some Ember Slimes grow to large sizes during a Wildfire, often taking smaller Slimes with them."

The other Miniboss of the Wildfire, Ember Slime Mothers behave like any other slime. However, once their health is critical, they release two Ember Slimes.

Drops:
-Coins
-Gel
-Living Fire Blocks (10-20)
-Ember Slime Mother Banner (after every 50 kills)
slimemombanner.png

Lastly, the items.

spicywing.png

Tooltip: Winner winner... Phoenix dinner?

durgencoco.png

Tooltip: Good morning, madaslimes!

Not much to say, they're Food potions that give you Well Fed. Spicy Wing gives it for 3 minutes, Cocoa gives it for 7.

firehat.png
firecoat.png
fireboots.png

The Firefighter Set, composed of the Firefighter Helm, Coat and Galoshes, is an actual armour set as opposed to the Rain set. The Helm has 3 defense, the Coat 3 and the Galoshes 2 for a total of 8 defense.
The set bonus is taking 5% less damage from any fire-based enemies or hazards.

fireaxe.png

Tooltip: Heeeeeere's Johnny!

The Fire Axe has 55% axe power, but chops 5% faster if a Wildfire is currently occurring.

ashpetal.png

Tooltip: Summons a Spectral Enenra Half to accompany you

Just a pet item. The Spectral Enenra Half (right of the image) behaves just like the Enenra enemy in its smoke-puff form. It also goes well with a Katana, or the next item on the list...

smokesplitter.png

Tooltip: It could cut through 10 flames at once!

A sword that deals 31 damage and makes a sizzling sound when it swings. It has no autoswing, but it makes up for this with its unique power.
When the player holds down the swing button, the Smokesplitter will shine up to three times. When the button is released, it will slash in front of the player up to three times, depending on how long the button was held down. The player can still move around while charging their attack.

durgentail.png

A unique Ranged weapon that deals 33 damage in addition to dealing the On Fire! debuff. Stretches to 15 tiles before retracting, pierces enemies both when shot out and on its return trip, and is not affected by gravity.

So, there's everything. What do you people think?

Just one question: did you invented that at your own? Or was that based on the fire system of Terraria Overhaul mod?

Another thing I would like to say is that you lost the perfect opportunity to put one more good item to your idea, more specifically in the Phoenix enemy. You should have made it drop a Phoenix Feather, rarely. And that item would be able to summon a Phoenix mount that can fly. It would be super cool.

I actually didn't have Overhaul's fire system in mind when making this, it was primarily inspired by an old idea I had for a reverse-Rain event (rain is water and wildfires are well, fire), with a bit of inspiration from SzGamer's Acid Rain, one of my favourite suggestions.

As for the Phoenix mount, that's actually not a bad idea, I'll consider it. I actually thought about one of its drops being a Phoenix egg that gives you a baby Phoenix pet, or a full-grown one that references Fawkes from Harry Potter.
