This may be a bad idea, but I wanted to throw this out there.
How about a ranged weapon that sticks a tracker to an enemy (mechanics similar to the Pirana Gun, accept you don't have to hold the trigger, and you can switch the weapon without the effects disappearing) that adds an icon to the Map/Minimap and keeps the npc from despawning.
The tracker only disappears if:
1. The player is killed
2. The player leaves the world
3. The npc leaves a world boarder (WoF)
4. A respawn item is used (Magic Mirror)
Not sure if this would be game-breakingly OP, but if it is please be sure to comment you ideas/support.
