I want to try to start spriting, but first thing's first: I need some free spriting software. Does anyone know of any free, good working, pixel sprite creator?
I use standard MS paint + piskel for animations or MS paint + Paint.net for static sprites which require a transparent background. To my opinion, the simplest and fastest user interface is the one from mspaint. Also no need to configure all kinds of stupid things like filling preferences and tool hardness which are a hindrance when creating pixel art.
I got Spriter Pro (for a dollar or two!) as part of a Humble Bundle deal this past spring or summer. They have a free version too, stripped down but it's got the important stuff. Here's the comparison page: http://www.brashmonkey.com/spriter.htm
I use Grafx2. It's somewhat limited and doesn't have any advanced drawing and image-editing tools like paint.net and Gimp (and some basic functions like transparency and palette management are a bit obscure and weird at first), but it's very quick and easy to use and is excellent for more old-style pixel art with smaller palettes and strong, distinct colours.
