Why does the rune wizard do so much melee damage?

It's a wizard, but it does 200/400/600 melee damage. Why? Is there like a reason in the lore? It's a wizard. You would think it's magic would be more powerful, but apparently, it's magic is over twice as weak.

It is because he is really rude, but his voice is so quiet that you need to get close to hear it. If you get close enough you can hear him saying 'I know you did not shower today, you smell' and it hurts so much that you explode.
