Yeah, but then it blocks their spawn or you have to remove the bed, you can't just put spikes below a placed spawn bed.

Just surround the starting spawn with lihzahrd brick, make the floor wooden spikes, fill the entire thing in with lava, and remove everyone's beds (except for yours, for obvious reasons.) Then shut down the server and relaunch it, claiming that the shutdown was an accident.
