Roughly 25% of all Palm and Jungle trees, when generated, will get a "fruit" tag. Those with a fruit tag can grow durians on their branches, just for added realism. Of course, we can't just stop there...
'It seems to have a mind of its own'
That's a durian. They grow like that on the trees.
They can also fall if you walk beneath them or if you chop the tree, with a 20% chance in normal mode and a 50% chance in Expert. The little bastards can sense when you're beneath them, yeah, and drop themselves on you. This deals a sizable amount of damage - 30 or 40 without any armor! And it has a low chance to make you bleed for a little while. You ever seen those thorns?
Durians found on the ground (they'll likely be embedded in it, they're that heavy) can be mined with any pickaxe to yield themselves. Although they do pose a small, 10-HP danger while lying there, placed durians do no damage to players or monsters. Or you could craft them with bare hands into an opened durian.
If not placeable, durians could be used as weaponry similar to spiky balls. Do you think this would be viable? I think a good way to do it would be to have them be weaponry raw, but then crafting them into something else would allow them to be placed, or even made into furniture.
It's worth noting that durians are, as we know, omnicidal, and will drop themselves on monsters as well, dealing damage properly.
(apologies for the shading, it doesn't show up very well because it's yellow)
These can be eaten to provide Well Fed for 10 minutes, which isn't much, but also Thorns for five - which is pretty nice! They can also be substituted for cactus in Thorns Potions, but they're too useful to go to waste like that.
There was originally going to be a blobby durian-shelled enemy here as a reference to Megaman's Mets. I decided to discard it because it felt out of place. If there's too much request, I may bring it back, though.
Personally I think that the jungle or the oceans don't need any more hazards than they already have. The jungle now has beehives everywhere which are easy enough to accidentally hit and adding on to that what is basically a boulder that will hit you at random just seems like a bad idea. I think the ocean needs more content but I don't think that this would be the way to do it. Not only that but these would be annoying for the player if they have any tree farms for mahogany or palm wood going.
