exactly WHAT is the Corruption and the Crimson?

WAR-THERAPY

Skeletron Prime
title says it all. exactly what in gods name is happening to nature in these places???! i tend to imagine the Corruption as a radiation-contaminated wasteland where what little life is still left has mutated in horrific ways.

as for the crimson, i like to wounder if William Birkin didnt step into my world and opened a sample of G Virus in a canyon river.

what are your thoughts?

The corruption is very obviously some sort of infective biomass of some sort that landed in a kind of meteor. The Corruption has lots of vertical chasms, most of them have shadow orbs (I assume the core of such meteors). Shadow orb lands on the world, and starts corrupting the area around it, burrowing into the ground while releasing vile corruption and creatures start growing out of the nearby wildlife.

The Crimson, I'm assuming is something similar. Instead of borrowing straight down into the ground, the Crimson instead tunnels in differently and does similar things. They are probably both ancient virus-like things from space that hit the planet in ancient times and a war between them and the hallow erupted and eventually the war was won (by the evil side) and the greater evil and "good" spirits went to sleep and somehow this resulted in the Wall of Flesh being created (that only comes forth when you kill the Guide).

Or something.

I disagree one your Corruption and Crimson theory. The Corruption is mostly unknown, but I think Shadow Orb's may be EoW eggs.

As for the Crimson I made a lore thread that someone said "Is this closest anyone's ever gotten in making a story." Or something like that.
Link if you want to check it out, a lot of my assumptions there are based on factual evidence

Corruption is probably the part of the world where the sun never shone. The darkness forged with the elements of the valley, turning it dark and eerie. Beneath the land, the corrupted beings created a flame that shall never die, and not exhale light.

Crimson is known as "Cthulhu's dead corpse". The flesh rotting there created new life, but mutated. The blood broke down into a powerful liquid known as Ichor

Ahh, yeah, that would make a better Crimson story.

I still stick with the "flea from outer space" thing with Corruption; you can't mistake those meteor chasms IMO. lol. It always seemed to me that both Corruption and Crimson are otherworldly forces that did not originate on Terraria but came from somewhere else. Since we get to fight what appears to be a reincarnation of Cthulhu in 1.3 that comes from "the moon", this seems to give some support for this.

Corruption idea: The EoW came from space, "eating" through the world to create chasms, the ones you see in the Corruption. The digestive juices broke down the dirt and stone around it, and are the key source of the spreading in Hardmode. As the juices digest the world, it gets mutated and stripped of all its nutrients. The Cursed Flames are not really flames, but the EoW's stomach acids in their purest form (hence why they don't get put out). The Shadow Orbs are, as @Seeker said, EoW eggs. and the EoWs in game are only babies, and cannot digest the ground, only burrow through it.

Hey that isn't fact, y'all should go @Everybody social forum for discussing both of these biomes.

The Crimson is Cthulhu's necro'd god-corpse. 'Nuff said.

Based on the background, the crimson is probably the blood of the beast (Not gonna say Cthulhu's) and managed to create organisms from it. I'm not sure about the corruption though... Perhaps it has something to do with the Eater of Worlds.

*cough* *hack*

Corruption is where the strong get stronger. A soul can't be tough until it has been beaten...several times.

Crimson is just a bloody mess that bores me.

Corruption, as well as Crimson, is a land which should not exist (as often told you by the Dryad). The Corruption contains corrupt lifeforms, messed up races of monsters (take Slimer and Corrupt Slime as abnormal slimes) and the sheer amount of scouting enemies (3 worms and 3 airborn enemies) suggests that spreading this infection is all these corrupt creatures want to accomplish.

The Crimson, on the other hand, is a different "land which shouldn't exist", in a sense that it's a living bloody wasteland, where dead flesh reunites to take revenge for something meta. The Crimson seems less organised and more aggressive (from enemy types and buffs/debuffs) than the corruption, making it a more unpredictable threat (herpling AI, floaty gross out of nowhere, crit buffs, teleporting brain).

Though that doesn't mean that the Crimson is generally more dangerous than the corruption! The corruption provides a constant, omnipresent threat, especially through worms, thorns growing on the surface, and fall-damage-death chasms, while the crimson can't decide on whether to hurt you badly or just warn you of its might. I think the best way to describe these two biomes is by comparing the Rage and Wraith Potions.

I think crimson is cancerous/leprosy or something made out of unstable stem cells and corruption is like mold

I think they're created by minions of ancient dark spirits - by Eater of Worlds and Brain of Cthulhu. EoW burrowed in the land and contaminated it, laying eggs that accumulate dark energy to break dark spirits free. Corruption is the land infected by Cthulhu's blood (the ruler of ancient dark spirits, could use other, less memetic and more original name, but Red made it the way it is), with BoC guarding different dark energy accumulators, Crimson Hearts.

I believe that they are simply generated every time a world is made:D

I folliw the mindset that the crinson is an area spattered with the still living remains of an elder god. The lifeforms are parasitic and feed off of the fleshy mass that continues to grow there. Save for face monsters and floaty grosses which i believe to be mutated humans that were somehow infected by the landscape. Perhaps they went bear grylls and drank some ichor?

I imagine crimson as an uncontrolled fleshy growth, like cancer or something
