Isn't darkness already pure black? I am very sure that when your character is in complete darkness it is impossible to see.

i mean the background as well, so the moon and stars have no light, it would also make darkness more oppressive by dampening lights and reducing their range

Radio Thing makes it orangeish for the most part and a blueish-grey color during some times of the day (mostly around sunrise and sunset?) alongside applying a weird swirly pattern which is easier to see when zoomed in
