Community Manager - Pipeworks
Good afternoon, Terrarians!

My name is Earnest “Nex” Cavalli, and I’m the Community Specialist at Pipeworks Studio. Sorry for bursting in here like this, but I’ve got big news: As you've likely read, Pipeworks Studio is now officially the developer behind the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Terraria!

Don’t worry, we aren’t going to come in with wrecking balls and tear down everything that Re-Logic’s worked so hard to build. You’ll spot the Pipeworks logo when you start the game, but Terraria will remain the same pixelated, creative sandbox you’ve come to know and love, though the updates we’re making to the Terraria code base will allow us to squash bugs more efficiently, add content more rapidly, and continue to build on the amazing foundation Re-Logic has created.

And that’s where you come in. Though we’ll be working behind the scenes to ensure that your biomes are populated, and your Planteras aren’t wilted, we recognize that nobody can match your collective expertise on all things Terraria. Your feedback is tremendously valuable, and we encourage you to continue sharing your ideas, comments, and concerns on the official Terraria forums. In turn, we’re going to work to be as responsive, straightforward, and honest with you as we can. There are some aspects of development that we’ll need to keep a lid on at times, but we’re committed to working alongside all of you to ensure that the Terraria community remains inspiring, welcoming, and, most importantly, fun.

Now, who’s got questions?

Will console finally get a mini map on screen instead of having to pause the game to look where you are?

I only ask because on the hallow comparison it has a mini map

Also what do you mean by pc intergrated control style

We're working to make the console game mirror the PC's 1.3 update. That includes the current PC gamepad control scheme as well as a mini map.

Why not produce 360, PS3 and Vita? they're too old? You'd have to use older hardware?

That's not really our call. We were asked to work on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, and we agreed. While we're contributing to those versions of the game, Terraria remains Re-Logic's baby, and they make all the major decisions.

Will you remove/rework Ocram and other version exclusive content to better fit with the game?

Glad to have you fine folks aboard. I've gone ahead and stickied this thread so people looking for answers can find you guys easily.

Question... I thought Pipeworks worked for 505 Games, not directly with Re-Logic. Am I wrong? Not that it really matters to the end user, I'm just trying to make sense of all the companies involved.

Pipeworks is its own company. They just handled QA until now.

Deej (Dee Jay) here, long time player, first time questioner. So... Does it really take three licks to get to the middle of a tootsie pop? Wait...that seems to date me. Are there any plans to put your own creative spin on Terraria, or is it strictly "Implement what is in the PC version on to consoles?" And will all the consoles exclusives stay in the game during the 'reset'? Thank you for your time :)

Yeah, what about console exclusive items? Will they be gone? Or will they be incorporated to PC version to keep the code base similar?

First of all welcome.
Secondly, a couple questions. I saw where you said that the plan for console 1.3 it was to mirror PC 1.3, is that going to include a UI overhaul? On console you have separate screens for crafting, housing, inventory, chests, player equipped items and shops. Will that change?
Also, I thought controller support for PC didn't arrive til 1.3.1, so, will we see parts from that update as well?

What does Console Reset actually mean? Are you doing a new rewrite (like Engine originally did) using the PC 1.3.x codebase as reference, or are you actually running the PC code on console (maybe by porting MonoGames to console)?

The decision to discontinue these platforms was made due to hardware limitations.

To expand on this. During the planning phase for 1.3 and beyond, 505 and Engine worked closely to examine what was and was not possible with old gen. You could already see cracks forming due to memory issues on <1gb devices across the board (Vita memory overflow crashes and the same on mobile), and what came back was that 1.3 was pretty much going to break old gen stability in a big way. So you would have 1.3 content in an essentially unplayable game that crashed non-stop.

Not content with that, we wanted to see if other solutions could be explored - and the only ones that had even remote feasibility were going to compromise how the game played in substantial ways that we felt undercut the vision of the game so much that there was no point even going there: having a well-working 1.2.4 era game (which is a damned fine game in and of itself) was really the only path that made sense. "Here is your crappy-performing 1.3 with all kinds of corners cut that compromise even the core gameplay that you have now" didn't seem like a really smart way to go. Quality has to come first.

Anyone thinking that anyone at Re-Logic or 505 Games is "happy" to have to deliver this news is sorely mistaken. We would have loved nothing more than to keep everyone rolling and happy. However, 1.3 was a pretty big "jumping off" point for hardware requirements. Even on PC, we had to "leave behind" people on older PCs that could no longer meet the requirements. That always sucks, but this is how technology works.

With that being the case, the upside was that it loosed the chains on what was possible with Current Gen. Enter Pipeworks and their ambitious task to rewrite the entire thing in a way that really makes things much more tight to PC (I can hardly tell them apart now!) and opens up doors to future possibilities.

PW is owned by the same company that owns 505. So, they are more like "siblings in the same household" by my understanding.

Good question, this. I would think for continuity of saves that you couldn't just remove them....but I'm no tech guy.

Quick question will Wii u also be getting the 1.3/reset?
It is currently in pre 1.2.4 limbo with nothing being said about it.

Damned mobile, hard to post. Anyway, about the saves, it's possible to just disregard the items and replace them with nothing, they simply have to remove the references to mobile exclusive items, so when the game loads said save it'll simply see a bunch of unrecognized data that can then be sanitized
