So today I was playing with my brother and we got into hardmode. I had fished up a ton of crates (all iron) and smashed demon alters but when I opened them I got zero hardmode ores. Is there a reason for this or am I stupid?

If you are playing 1.4, then pre-hardmode crates don't drop hardmode ores anymore, even when opened in a hardmode world.

You need to fish the hardmode equivalents in a hardmode world: Pearlwood, Mythril, Titanium, Bramble, Azure, Defiled, Hematic, Divine, Stockade, Boreal, Mirage, Hellstone or Seaside.
