Weapons & Equip Prioritizing Bullet Types For Specific Ranged Weapons

I was thinking about ranger and I realized it's annoying to switch bullets and I always use like 2 or 3 types of bullets throughout my entire ranger playthroughs so I thought of a cool idea to make ranger more dynamic. Adding a sort of bullet loader, the bullet loader would allow you to assign an ammo type to a weapon, for example I could assign explosive ammo to an Onyx Blaster and it would shoot explosive bullets only, no matter which ammo slot they were in. This means you can have secondary weapons with different ammo types, like a sidearm for ichor or another sort of debuff and a crowd control weapon with explosive or piercing bullets, then a main weapon with a high single target ammo.

Another thing I wanted to mention is if you were to run out of ammo, it would function as normal until you get more of the assigned ammo and if you wanted to you could always unassign the ammo from the gun.

(To clarify on the function, it is an item NOT an accessory. You select the item and click the bullets you want to use then click on the gun and it assigns it to them, sort of like favoriting an item, it just highlights it or something that shows that it has a certain ammo type assigned to it. I think if it were an accessory it wouldn't be nearly as useful and I don't think it would be overpowered as an item rather than an accessory.)

Another cool concept my friend thought of is a revolver cylinder where you can load up to 6 ammo types into it and it revolves between them each shot. For example, I put in Crystal, Nanine, Chlorophyte, Venom, Ichor and Cursed bullets into the cylinder and it would shoot those bullets in that order.
 
This sounds too complicated for Terraria honestly. I agree with you that "smart ammo" or some other way of quickly and easily swapping ammo would be a good addition, but this isn't it.
terraria's normal progression is more complicated than this tbh
so yeah i'd say this works
here's a little rework of mine
the revolver cylinder would be purchase-able from the arms dealer, around pre-mechs to post 1 mech
once you buy the revolver cylinder you can combine it with the putrid scent to get a weaker buff (smth like 2% damage, 3% crit) and the cylinder usage
also make it 3 ammo types, 6 is way too broken lol

Well, first of all, how would the player use it? Would it bring up its own GUI or would you have to click things in the inventory somehow?
It would just be an item you click on a bullet type with then you click on the weapon with.

yeah 6 was just an example lol. I wasn't thinking of these as accessories personally but the cylinder could fit as one seeing how it's a bit more unique.

It's meant to be more like Terraria and I thought a specific "smart ammo" type thing feels more like a mod or something. I probably just worded it wrong but it's not really that complicated. I feel like they could add something like this to the game but it also does kind of feel like a Terraria 2 thing.

Something like this for other ranged weapons would be interesting too. I personally use bows and specialist range weapons a lot so maybe it either be more universal or later combine with other items.
 
what about pressing a key to switch the order of the ammo slots e.g 1->4 4->3 3->2 2->1
I feel like this wouldn't work well for console and I want my idea to have all versions in mind. Also having to press a bunch of buttons mid dodge and mid aim doesn't sound fun to me. I'd rather just have the usual 1-0 keys.
 
I don’t know about this… I’m highly divided by this suggestion. I wanna be able to have ammo at the ready regardless of what they are. More than likely I’ll be useing guns, bows, rockets, and darts (new post-Plantera dart gun would be nice), I prefer the way sorting ammo is currently.

I can see why you'd think this is complicated, but it's really just assigning an ammo type to a weapon. I'd just like to be able to use more of the same type of ranged weapons like multiple guns without having to use the same ammo. You can still get the affect of multiple ammo types with different types of ranged weapons though, so it sort of exists in the game.

I wouldn't want it to be that complicated. Having multiple ammo types is sort of complicated in itself but I think you're thinking too far into it. I just want it to be as simple as possible, nothing like that. Just a simple selection basically.

if it was an item it'd be too good, having it as an accessory would be nerfing it and wouldn't make it too strong

yeah I meant to say the cylinder would be an accessory it would be way too strong as an item
