Game Mechanics Providing a damage debuff to Cursed Inferno

What should the Cursed Jawbone do?

This thread was created mainly to suggest one change, a rather small one.

Cursed Inferno, in addition to dealing damage over time, would now reduce the afflicted entity's damage output by 20% (rounded up). Not only does it add some variety to the group of mostly identical debuffs consisting of Poison, On Fire!, Venom, Frostburn, and Cursed Inferno, but it gives some incentive to use the Cursed Flames spell in a boss fight, giving it a shot at competing with the Golden Shower in usage and popularity.

I felt that it would be most efficient to add this effect to an existing debuff rather than adding a new one, and besides, we all know that Cursed Inferno needed to be buffed.

But you know me. I'd be a little embarrassed to create a thread that suggests something so simple and easy to add. So, bonus accessory! (One that's somewhat related to the subject, thankfully.)

Cursed Jawbone

Dropped by Giant Cursed Skull, 4%

Debuffs inflicted by the player have no time limit.

Obviously, this is really handy against bosses that aren't immune. I don't think it affects balance by too much, though, since the only two relevant debuffs would be Ichor and Cursed Inferno. If you have an argument about the DoT being overpowered against bosses, please watch @General Milky's 40-minute Plantera kill with a Copper Shortsword before you post here.

(As suggested by @FlakMaster, the Cursed Jawbone can simply double debuff duration against bosses, if that's what people prefer.)

Obviously, an offensive accessory with no tinkers won't be a viable addition. Hello, Charm of Myths!

necroring.png

Necro Ring

Increases health regeneration, reduces Potion Sickness to 45 seconds, and player-inflicted debuffs are permanent.

If the tinker is instead with my Alchemist Charm, the Necro Ring would come with the additional bonus of doubling the duration of buffs.

The Cursed Jawbone isn't an "official" part of this suggestion, which is mainly about Cursed Inferno. Nevertheless, I thought it would be nice to introduce a little controversy. (Baconfry, you strategic bastard!)

Feel free to discuss implications here!

I will note something, and it applies to all current and future threads by all members.

If you're here to voice support and don't have anything else to say, just use the like button. I, personally, do not particularly care about seals of approval, nor about my support level expressed as an arbitrary percentage. What I do like to see is meaningful discussion, perhaps alternate methods or areas of further development. "10/10 full support" does not fit that bill.

But let's not end on a sour note! Shall we get the ball rolling?

Lovin' it! Cursed Inferno is really no match for the gold shower of doom, and this could really balance it out. Do you think that it could possibly weaken other stats too, such as knockback potential?

I think it's okay to leave it at damage. Knockback becomes irrelevant as soon as the Cobalt Shield is obtained, and a movement speed debuff could be saved for Frostburn.

10/10 Support! I love this idea, but have one question: Would the -20% Affect the player, and attack speed, knockback and whatnot? What about projectiles?

Yes, it would affect the player. No, it will not affect attack speed, knockback, or anything else. I would have it affect enemy projectiles if possible, but if it's not possible, then it will only decrease contact damage.

I think in terms of bosses, none of them should have immunity to most debuffs anyway. Switching to Ichor then going back to DPS-weapon is something that can't be shunned on because it is factually more strategic than spamming the Megashark with Chloro bullets in the general direction.

More on-topic, I think the cursed jaw-bone should only perma-debuff anything that isn't a bosses. For bosses, it can just double the time or something.

Oh, right, and the cursed inferno change is nice. I guess a defensive class can utilise cursed bullets to their advantage (a use for those things for once).

I am sure I said something about this once, but forgot...
Anyways, I love this idea, and it would give a lethal tinker for Magma Stone (Neverending Flames) or maybe something involving debuffs to enemies on contact damage or dealing that debuff when afflicted with it with the Ankh Charm (Cursed Jawbone + Ankh Charm = Anubis' Wrath).

Cursed Jawbone is a good idea, provided that Giant Cursed Skulls actually start inflicting debuffs.

There's just one tiny thing...

I have to disagree with this. The more people that come and just say "Support!" the more likely someone will show up with something actually useful to say. ;) I think a loc post is actually more useful than a simple like, but the likes are nice, too. :p

Now that's a way to improve a debuff. It's certainly better than just simply buffing its DoT or make it just another DPS freak machine.

Something about that Necro Ring tinkering doesn't sit well with me, though I could not quite pinpoint why. I think the other option is much more attractive.

YES, debuff and buffs are pretty unbalanced currently, with most player ones being too weak and enemies being too strong (you deal ~1 dps with fire and they deal way more, not fair =P)
and the giant cursed skull is yet another enemy that currently drops NOTHING but coins...

Baconfry. You are one of my first homies on the Terraria Forum scene. That being said, I'm going to tell you what I think about this idea.
+5,000 Support. I am foaming at the mouth. If they don't add ALL of this suggestion, my faith in humanity will wane.
The Necro Ring would have a permanent spot in my Accessory Slot. I already overuse the Charm of Myths.

Honestly though, I support the change to cursed inferno, but it seems like the cursed jawbone might be overpowered. It would be way to easy to spray the whole frost moon or duke fishron with Ichor and have it last forever. Maybe make it double the duration, so you at least have to stop firing your chain gun and reapply sometimes.

Don't listen to him Bacon! Don't nerf my Necro Ring! D:

I suppose I should put a poll up to see what the community thinks. Both doubling the duration and making it infinite were mentioned in the OP, so maybe it's time to settle it.

Here is a third option- rather than increasing the duration, it would increase the effectiveness of debuffs by like 10%. So Ichor would reduce armor by 22, new cursed flames would deal 6.6 (Rounded to 7) DoT and -22% damage, etc.
