Tool Terra AWG - Alternative worldgen for vanilla

Phase II

Terrarian
Terra AWG is a standalone tool for generating vanilla compatible worlds. It gives a fresh imagining of what exploration could be, while maintaining normal world progression.

Features

  • Enticing caves: designed to encourage exploration by often having a new cave visible near dead ends
  • Unlocked biome placement: spawn may not be a forest, the location of the jungle does not control other map features
  • Biomes collide: many merging rules for biomes/microbiomes (Corrupt glowing mushroom? Sure. Aether dungeon? Why not.)
  • Reworked chests: more biome specific loot, pooled luck (should still find Ice Skates, even with bad RNG), and updated progression locked chests (dungeon, underworld, temple) with items relevant to that stage of game
  • Redesigned structures: new layout for hives, dungeon, and temple
  • Map preview: outputs an image of the world map after generation (can be disabled to avoid spoilers)
  • Fast: hardware dependent of course; for me, takes about 1 second to generate a small world and 5 seconds for a large world

Screenshots

It is surprisingly difficult to capture how this worldgen looks and feels different, but here goes anyway.

Work in Progress

Currently I am making frequent updates to Terra AWG. It should be functional for full playthroughs, however some world regions may lack polish. Any feedback would be great (and helps guide features/fixes), but if you just want a world to play in for a long time, you may want to wait a bit.
  • Paintings/statues: some are currently unobtainable
I will complete these when I can, but I am just one person, building a world from scratch, in my free time.

Usage

  • Edit terra-awg.ini to choose world size, etc.
  • Run terra-awg to generate a new world (If you want to read the messages, run the program through command prompt/powershell/terminal, instead of just clicking on it)
  • Copy the new *.wld file into your saves folder (something like Documents\My Games\Terraria\Worlds)

That's pretty interesting. I like where you're going with it. It's a great start! Can't wait to see what you do with it in the future!

This sounds really cool! Once it's finished, I'd love to do a playthrough with it!

Great! Amusingly, I feel like I just entered a race with Re-Logic, to get this tool ready before they release the next update. Otherwise folks who might be trying Terra AWG, will instead be (understandably) trying all the new official secret seeds.

Released v0.1.0. Highlights:
  • Dungeon entrance structure
  • Underworld structures
  • Jungle Temple traps
  • Asteroid micro biome
  • Tall grasses/flowers/decorative rocks
Decay is random, and will change every world generation.

Ignore the black rectangles in the background. Seems to be a problem with underworld screenshots.

Very cool! I cannot wait to try this out, will add some variety to the generation which I have been missing! Keep up the great work!

Released v0.2.0. Highlights:
  • Implement missing trap types
  • Rework underworld structures (again)
  • Add mushroom cabins and igloos
  • Add spider hall

With structures, it is a bit tough to find the balance between "interesting enough to be exciting to find" and "not so unique it looks like someone else just pasted their build here" (an issue I have with some mods). My goal is to make exploration exciting, while still encouraging the player to be creative and build their own stuff. Hopefully I have found that line.

Incredible!
Quick question: What does the aether + hive look like?

An uncommon combo (fairly small target for the random numbers to collide those two), but when it does, the aether's terrain distortion is quite pronounced on the hive's structured layout.

Released v0.3.0. Highlights:
  • Sky loot distribution
  • Ocean caves
  • Desert tomb
  • Dungeon map room
  • Optional starter home

Looking for a particular micro biome? No need to use external tools. Careful investigation of the map room deep in the dungeon will guide your search.

Add a basic home to the spawn point (must enable in world generation config). Construction materials match the current biome. Contains a single (empty) chest.

Nearly have everything major implemented. The last missing piece is placing underground paintings and statues.

Incredible! I love the way the ocean caves look, and the map room is so cool! Does seem to be missing the aether, though...

A bit tricky to tell with the lighting, but the aether is represented by the purple gemspark block at the bottom left corner of the desert.

Do Mushroom Chests still have unique items?

Ðis looks great! Simple to use, supports multiple operating systems, and ðe actual terrain is really cool. Where does ðe idea of corrupt/crimson/jungle vines come from?

Yes, Mushroom Chests will always have either the Shroom Minecart or the Mushroom vanity set.

Idea for corrupt/crimson vines was the biome is an infection to the world. So it is concentrated at a central point and spreads tendrils outward. A bit like what you might see growing bacteria in a petri dish. This also provided an interesting way to distribute Shadow Orbs/Crimson Hearts: have them on the tendrils, like growths.

For the jungle vines, I wanted to do something with Living Mahogany that was different than just more living trees with alternate materials. Also the floating jungle islands looked odd to me without any connection to the ground. Combining the two problems, mahogany vines is what I came up with.
