Hello all, Teal here, bringing you the fourth edition of The Fallen Star Bestiary. We wanted to freshen up the Bestiary and make it more lively so we did some experimenting. As a group we decided to cover a boss and we all hope you enjoy this "endeavor edition" as much as we enjoyed writing it. I'd also like to apologize on behalf of our entire team for the late arrival of this edition. On a more positive note, we'd like to welcome @Samrux, your friendly neighbourhood paladin, to our team! His capable writing skill and high competence has been a very useful asset and we are excited to have him aboard. Check 'im out!


Starting next edition we will be instating a new policy. This policy means we will only give credit to those who actually participated in the writing of a particular edition. If you see a decline in team members listed you'll know why.

Eater of Worlds (Easyus Bossus Annelidae)


The Eater of Souls is an extremely large worm variant, and a very distinct and powerful threat to anyone crossing its path. This is due to its massive size, its moderately high damage output, and the multitude of painful ways in which it can attack the player. These include, but are not limited to, causing major physical injury with its powerful mandibles, constricting them utilising the length of its body, emotionally scarring its enemies by slinging insults, or ramming into them, launching them into the air and potentially causing a lethal drop down into a chasm.


The most notable feature of this beast is the fact that it is not a single entity, but rather many interdependent life forms, each co-existing in relative harmony and relying on the others for survival. Operating through the principle of strength in numbers, it is composed of many segments, each harbouring the ability to become its own individual and assume control over the rest. Due to their symbiotic nature, they require a minimum of two others in order to maintain their function. Should one or two of these sections become isolated from the main body, they will die, as the combined function of their organs is insufficient to maintain the operation of the resulting organism. However, if the worm is divided at a point that leaves three or more segments together on both resulting sides, the monster is effectively split into multiple independent entities. This essentially multiplies the battling capacity of the creature by allowing it to attack from multiple fronts simultaneously, compounding the danger involved when confronting it.


Recommended strategies involve systematically focusing any attacks onto the head or tail segments, neutralising them one by one, in order to prevent any splitting from occurring, and therefore any attempts to flank the player.

Due to maintain its gargantuan size, the beast requires large quantities of nutrient-rich food, and materials and toxins specific to the Corruption. Due to this dependency, it has evolved and adapted to acquire the means to access such sources of alimentation. In order to conserve energy in times where food is scarce, it is able to hibernate, often remaining inactive for months at a time.

The Eater of Worlds is a creature that solely inhabits the Corruption. If one were to leave the Corruption whilst locked in battle with the abomination, it would flee without warning: having become accustomed to the environment of its respective biome, the Eater of Worlds is in turn incapable of venturing into different ones, with habitats unfit for the maintenance of the worm’s life. The ultimate goal of the beast is to expand the Corruption, making the surrounding terrain more hospitable for itself and any of its potential offspring.


The segments are attached to each other through a series of robust tendrils, that ensure that they do not separate, unless cut by force. The vast majority of its body is covered in its hide, composed of an unknown material as strong as iron, albeit flexible. But it is noteworthy that its weakness lies in the gaps in its armour; at the joints, making it the easiest to damage the creature through the division of its bonds. Should a segment be damaged beyond repair not at its tendrils, though, the greater body automatically ejects it in the purpose of not hindering the entire entity. In this scenario, in an almost instantaneous process, the far extremities of the isolated segments assume the role of head or tail segments respectively.


The “head” will tend towards the development of powerful mandibles, able to exert enough force to crush stone. Throughout the length of the inner depths of its body, the Eater of Worlds would digest this debris, extracting the nutrients present within. As a waste product of this process, large quantities of Demonite ore are produced, an otherworldly metal that is only found in minute quantities in the wild; the “tail” expels this corrupt alloy, functioning as a stopper for the organs and tissue within the creature in order to prevent their untimely departure. Without the tail, the worm would likely perish as its entrails left its body.


Each segment has full capability of becoming either part. Within one, several complex mechanisms are at play, ensuring that once the creature is cut, only one segment at each extremity is converted into a head and a tail, respectively. Upon activation, these mechanisms ensure the rapid inflation or dismantling of internal components and organs in order to assume the function of the desired type of segment. Should these signals fail to transmit properly, this could invariably result in a new entity possessing two head or two tail segments, or perhaps cause organ malfunctions, forcing it to divide further in order to restore the normal state of the creature.

Its respiratory system greatly affects its lifestyle, in the sense that it is a prime deciding factor of what the greater entity must do in order to survive. Inhaling air from other biomes will damage the respiratory system of the creature, since it requires a near-constant exposure to the toxins present in the Corruption, found in the air and caves of infected regions. If the Eater of Worlds was to ingest something of considerable size, this will lead to the blockage of its airways. Should the circumstances turn in this direction, the greater entity will be significantly weakened. In order to offset this, its mandibles are able to form a sharp point, and its body able to rotate at high speeds, resulting in a drilling motion that is able to excavate soil and stone alike at impressive speeds, allowing it to fragment its food into manageable amounts.


The Eater of Worlds is also prone to cutaneous conditions, which can also have an effect on its lifestyle and functions. If its skin were to be scarred and diseased, its movement speed would decrease, and end up affecting the internal organs of the entity as a whole. To prevent this, segment cuts can be performed to isolate the offending segment, ensuring the health of the entity as a whole.

Well, that was it.

The fun of writing live in a group is watching how the three paragraphs you wrote one day have completely morphed into something completely different by the second.
 
Alrighty then. It's up. And it looks pretty amazing. Good job on segmenting the whole entry in some form, it's looking good.

I'm glad we got through to this as a team, even after the fall-outs we had. So proud to have assembled such a great team of resilient writers.
 
I've always liked these "Monsterpedia" kinds of things in games. Definitely keeping an eye on this!
Also, can you do an entry on, hmm...the Wisp?
 
Actually, that's a fantastic idea. Our next entry is 'Giant Tortoises', but we'll definitely consider doing Wisps after. Who knows?

Anyway, @Molos Elethros , when you have the time, we'd need a banner for the upcoming entry.
Wisps aren't even enemies though. We know nothing about them.
 
That's probably true, yes. But we might find some way, I mean, I did a Terraria Knowledge segment on it.
 
Small Update:

If anybody wants to prepare art for 'Giant Tortoises' now is the time. We're working laboriously on this entry, so it should be coming soon. Just in case anyone wanted to contribute and show some excellent fan art.

Also, I've cleaned up everything in the two threads, updated News and Milestones, and added @Lord Llama to the convenient Subscription List.
 
That actually makes sense since they are only dropped by skeletons who seem to be possessed. These skeletons also spawn dungeon spirits on death (most of the time)
