Member-Run Project The Fallen Star Bestiary

Small Update:

Hey folks, entry should be nearing the finished stage. We'd just like to welcome both @The Magic Cookie and @TheQuietBisharp to our talented team. And who knows, we might be seeing another member join. We don't know who quite yet, but we are choosing one out of two applicants.

And unfortunately, talented writer @SilverHexxitFights is leaving us after some confusion. So that sure is a shame. Maybe with the swarm of new members, this will compensate for this loss.

This time it's Pixel, bring out our fifth entry. And it's come all together all so quickly. Considering we have our new policy established and in effect, we're only going to be crediting those who contributed to this large and information-rich entry. So, without further ado, thank you to the team members who participated in this edition.

We'd also like to congratulate and welcome the new members of our team, all three. @TheQuietBisharp, @The Magic Cookie, and @Darkwraith332 , three excellent writers who provided us with great examples of their work, and showed competence with their applications. And, unfortunately, we also have @SilverHexxitFights , who will be leaving us. Anyway, back to the entry.

Entry 5: Giant Tortoise

index.php

Giant Tortoises are one of the few reptile inhabitants of the land of Terraria, alongside the Lihzahrd people and the mysterious Ice Tortoises. Whilst they are native to deserts, they were driven out of their homeland in ancient times by archaic desert-dwelling races. This explains their hard compact skin and rugged scales. Surprising for a conservationist species that happens to absorb water via their skin, they roam in the highly-saturated Jungle. The dense humid climate that is home to the animal has benefitted from their presence just as the tortoise benefits from it: the tortoises very effectively regulate the fish population and control many fungi that would otherwise be parasitic to trees.

Unfortunately, the populations of tortoises have dwindled due to over-hunting and poachers, who target the precious shell on their back; said shell is a precious commodity held in high regard for tribal rituals and protection. The shell exhibits a high defensive capability, and the substance that comprises it is considered one of the strongest materials known to man.

Locating and Tracking:

These shelled reptiles are prevalent in the Jungle, and by this reason are only found in the this select biome. This means locating them is a lot more narrowed down and allot less free and open, which should benefit the player if they decide to capture this beast. The Giant Tortoises roam the surface, so finding them should be relatively easy if mistakes aren't made. Both restricted only to the Jungle, in terms of spawning, and present on only but the surface: two advantageous points on why these reptiles are considerably easy to locate.

However, these creatures are very difficult to take down. Their shell is strong and sturdy, and damage output high enough to take some wind out of your body, so caution must be taken before advancing any further. Recommended ways of sneaking up on a Giant Tortoise can vary, especially after experiences. One good trick in the book is swimming underwater. If one were to swim underwater, they'd catch the tortoise unawares and most likely shock it to the point it becomes incapacitated. Though this doesn't necessarily work all the time, there's always the chance.

Taming:

Raising a Giant Tortoise from its egg or juvenile stage is an ideal method to obtain and tame a Giant Tortoise, as it allows one to save considerable time with the taming process, given their inherent mental malleability. However, eggs are difficult to encounter; Giant Tortoise nests tend to be sparse and well camouflaged with their surroundings. Obtaining a juvenile from the creep is an extremely unlikely endeavour, given that Giant Tortoises, particularly the females, have been known to be fiercely protective of their young, seeking to protect them via any means necessary; even if this insinuates the loss of their own lives. Given the relative difficulty of these methods, we will instead cover the most likely method of taming a Giant Tortoise - taming an adult.

After the tortoise has been located and tracked, the creature needs to be subdued before it can be tamed. Giant Tortoises exhibit great resilience, a quality that becomes all the more amplified when they are placed in danger. When threatened, they will not hesitate to act in self-defense, using their resilient carapaces and their substantial bulk to crush or otherwise cripple their foes. After one has weakened the creature, an ideal course of action would be to sedate the creature before beginning with the taming process.

Taming an adult Giant Tortoise is significantly more challenging than taming a younger one; they tend to become more stubborn as they age. Given their rather substantial size, they can be quite difficult to successfully tranquillise, often requiring significant quantities of sedative before they are to be rendered unconscious. One must then proceed to tame the creature. This reptile is reluctant to let free, so this means that taming it will prove difficult. Taming methods include (but are not limited to) the following;

pencil_bullet_by_nerdy_pixel_girl-d8c942t.png
Method 1: Having sedated the Giant Tortoise, it should develop somewhat friendly and non-hostile behaviour, contrary to its previous moods and reactions. This is a sign that the reptile is attempting to forge a bond, but this alone amounts to very little. Feeding the Giant Tortoise plants such as cacti and glowing mushrooms will trigger mental reactions in the tortoise that will serve to slowly usher it towards one’s loving and caring embrace.

pencil_bullet_by_nerdy_pixel_girl-d8c942t.png
Method 2: Brewing a potion composed of regular Mushrooms and Bottled Honey will create a draught that, if administered directly into the reptile's bloodstream, will further calm the beast, allowing more time for a bond between the player and the tortoise to form. The concoction should be boiled for several minutes under a low flame before it is applied. It should then be administered quickly, for should the mixture be allowed to cool before of application, its effects will be greatly diminished.

Combat:

The combat style of a tortoise is dependent on its observations and assessments of its surroundings. Offense is not the sole factor that grants a Giant Tortoise victory in struggles; their composition also plays a part. These creatures possess rough, uneven skin on the soles of their feet, allowing them to retain their grip on the damp floors of the Jungle whilst serving as an additional layer of defense. Their shell possesses vastly more utility than as a tool of defense, due to the material it is composed from; alongside shielding the tortoise as a whole, it can also be used as a weapon to crush or otherwise cripple threats. Giant Tortoises exploit this to the best of their ability, using their powerful leg muscles to jump high and somersault into their foes. This manoeuvre deals heavy damage to the unwary adventure, the sheer force of the attack knocking them back for quite some distance. This combination of offensive prowess coupled with their innately defensive nature results in a very effective mixed combat style. This style enjoys a near-perfect synergy of offense and defense, where little of one is sacrificed for the other.

Habitat and Alimentation:

The digestive system of a Giant Tortoise is adapted to its primary diet of the critters and other small creatures of the Jungle, allowing them to effectively obtain their nourishment from their prey without experiencing any negative effects. Their gastric acid is incredibly potent, able to denature even the toughest of materials and the deadliest of toxins, an undeniable boon to their survivability.

Giant Tortoises are not limited to a certain diet, being able to consume almost anything they encounter. However, their primary diet consists of the organisms that dwell on the surface of the Jungle. Their speed is quite extraordinary for a beast of such size, for they are able to dash rapidly for short distances, often leading to them being able to ensnare birds before they are able to fly away. If they feel they are insufficiently sated, they are not against venturing into the depths of the Jungle to seek larger prey.

Due to its ideal temperature and humidity, Giant Tortoises are able to live almost anywhere in the Jungle. Giant Tortoises are incredibly hardy, for when they are placed in a novel biome, their systems are able to adapt at a vastly accelerated rate to their new environments. A prime example of such an occurrence in nature is the Ice Tortoise, which has adapted to life in the harsh, polar, sub-zero Snow biome.

Hey Pixel, can I subscribe as well (even though I am part of the writing crew) because I am not seeming to be getting alerts from the bestiary.

Missed the EoW entry, but it looks good all the same :happy:.Aside from that it looks really nice.

@Teal Also I'm pretty sure that the Eater of Souls doesn't exist:D.

Hey Pixel, think you slipped up on one thing. Giant Tortoises can in fact be found in the Underground Jungle. Other than that, really nice entry.

Well I knew near to nothing on Giant Tortoiss before we got to this entry, so it was little difficult, even if I did a good two--three paragraphs before editing stage.

Not sure if I'll fix the error; we'll see. Thanks for point it out, @Mikenno .

Update:

Cleaned up the second main post, the one with FAQ and that all, and also edited in all of @Commander Crocket 's edits, that came after we posted the orginal entry.

We recommend readers to re-read through this entry, as it has been upgraded.

Anyway, @Molos Elethros , Teal was talking about you making custom dividers for our entries? I mean, that'd be really cool. But I'm not sure what we would do. Would we have dividers for each individual entry, customized for that particular mob, or would we just have a single 'fancy-shmancy' divider for every one of our entries to use? Might be something to discuss.

Yes, I know, you don't want to make a double post. I, too, think just one divider would work very nicely, but would have to be made appropriately in order to fit the TCF themes and bestiary as a whole.

Teal, yet again. This edition we bring you a request which we developed into more. We'd like to start of by thanking @Darkwraith332 for the suggestion. The credit for this bestiary entry:

@Pixel
@Teal

@The Magic Cookie
@Shadow gamer
@TheQuietBisharp

I'd also like to cover suggestions. So many interesting and brilliant suggestions are flooding in, but as a disclaimer we will be trying to put off 'humanoid' type monsters (This includes anything resembling a human. Ice Golems, Zombies, Skeletons, etc) until later on, or mobs that have little factual information to base bestiary content on.

Entry 6: Spiders

index.php

Spiders are one of the most dangerous and cunning creatures in the land of Terraria. They come in a few variants, each different individual dependent on their habitat. This makes them biodiverse to some degree, but not necessarily common. These spiders inhabit nests that are deep underground and grouped together in large numbers. Spiders aren't restricted to these nests; they will also appear in other places, like in the Crimson. For the most part, they all live underground. Their quick speed and versatile movement grants them an advantage when it comes to combat, because they can easily get around in wide, open space. This isn't to say, however, that spiders can't do this just fine where there isn't a bare minimum of place to move around with.

On the body of a spider, there is a large pulsating sac. It secretes a toxic venom that is deadly to monsters and humans alike. In the female variant of the spider, this sac also carries her eggs. A female arachnid tends to cover up her eggs because otherwise its babies will be prone to attacks. Of course, due to its form and size, concealing its sac is rather difficult in some circumstances.

Locating and Tracking:

There are a few different types of spiders in Terraria, so with that being said means that there are many different ways to find them. Spiders can be found in the Jungle, Crimson, and various spider caves found underground. You will typically have to delve into deep and risky areas in order to find them. These eight-legged monsters are by no means hard to find, because their caves are everywhere, if one looks in the right place.

However, tracking spiders is a different story. Once you are in the various caves that spiders can be found in, you will notice that it is very dark. Spiders will take every advantage to kill the player when there isn’t a decent amount of light, but once you get an item that will illuminate cave systems, one will be able to handle them quite well. While tracking spiders, the player should always be on their guard. A misstep can alert the whole nest to their presence. As you track the creatures down, be on the lookout for cobwebs. They will be everywhere once you get closer to the spider nest. By following these webs, there's a good chance of finding the spiders.

Taming:

The spider is not a beast that is easily tamed. Their erratic behaviour makes them difficult beasts to contain when confronted and cornered. In this type of situation, they will scale surrounding structures, such as cave walls, in order to pounce on the attacker with the element of surprise. Be careful, for you could end up inside a cocoon of string.

To subdue these creatures for the purposes of taming, you must obtain a sample of their venom. This can be done by jamming an empty vial between their fangs and then flashing a shiny object in front of their eyes. Accomplishing this task may be difficult, so you should equip ranged weapons that inflict negative status effects. Once you have obtained the venom, mix it with a vial of water, a minced moonglow seed, and five fallen stars. This will create a serum that will knock out any spider, and it will erase any of their memories that are malicious toward humans. Simply pour it into the target’s mouth, and it will be rendered unconscious after five seconds. When it wakes up, do not fear; it will be harmless to humans, and it will only attack when ordered to by its tamer.

As a warning, Blood Moons have been known to rile up even tamed spiders. It is advised to put it on a leash or keep it under lock and key during this event.

Combat:

Spiders are very difficult to defeat in a swarm. They can also function with the loss of multiple eyes and legs (*Note: A spider’s eyesight isn’t that necessary, they mainly rely on their sense of smell as well as feeling with their sensitive hairs ). Your best bet is having items meant for crowd control that can eliminate these beasties in a few hits. The Paladin’s Hammer is an excellent choice, as it pierces and crushes with ease. When in a large enough swarm, the sound of their scuttling legs can be enough to incapacitate those with arachnophobia. Even if you don’t have a horrible fear of them, the stench of their den can overpower many a hero. They also revert to a more primal state, jumping at you with no concern for their own well-being. If they get too close, they can easily inflict you with their venomous bite, in which you have one option. RUN. Their venom is always deadly unless treated by somebody with a lot of experience in the medical field.

One on one is a whole different fight when dealing with a spider. They play a much more conservative game, as a new force awakens deep within the spider. You see, spiders are ancient beings. They’ve been around for a very long time, longer than some of the evilest things in Terraria. They awaken within them the feeling of a predator toying with its prey. Although they realize you, as a human, trump the arachnid in size, the spider is far more clever when not in its brood state.

It fires its sensitive hairs like blowdarts, attempting to inflict you with it’s paralyzing poison at long range. If you aren’t completely paralyzed, the points of impact will itch for days afterwards. It will follow your movements, rearing up on its hind legs and raising its mandibles to appear more threatening. If it sees an opportunity, it will quickly strike with two sword-like legs tucked underneath the abdomen. This is when swordplay is your best friend. It takes an alert mind and agile movements to defeat a spider with a blade, but if you can cut its the joints of its limbs clean through, the spider loses its best weapon. Yet, all of this can be easily avoided if you use ranged weapons, such as a repeater or sniper rifle. However, be aware that spiders have a high resistance to magical weapons, so they are pretty much your worst option when fighting any eight-legged freak.

Special Combat Abilities:

pencil_bullet_by_nerdy_pixel_girl-d8c942t.png
Wall Creepers have no extraordinary talents but they spawn in numbers greater than all of the other spiders combined. They seem to drop off the food chain after the Wall of Flesh is defeated, suggesting Black Recluses entirely wipe out this species.

pencil_bullet_by_nerdy_pixel_girl-d8c942t.png
Blood Crawlers will explode into corrosive blood, a liquid that can burn through the toughest of armor. They can also consume so much blood that they will remain immobile, but they can use the leftover liquid as a deadly projectile.

pencil_bullet_by_nerdy_pixel_girl-d8c942t.png
Black Recluses have the ability to ensnare unsuspecting explorers in nets woven of sticky string. Once encased with this string, chemical digestion will begin.

pencil_bullet_by_nerdy_pixel_girl-d8c942t.png
Jungle Creepers have made their poison extremely potent with the noxious juices secreted by jungle flora. This poison is always fatal, unless you have natural immunity. An Ankh Shield is your greatest ally against this foe.

divider.png

Habitat and Alimentation:

Spiders can be found in all sorts of caves and crevices. They are not needy creatures, give them a cave and they build a nest. Only be warned, since they prefer heated environments more. It loosens their exoskeletons, and gives them enhanced movement.

A spider's diet is a tricky one to get through. Whilst their food isn't varied all too much, they do, on the other hand, need a high amount of nourishment for survivability and bodily functions to get into their gears. As previously stated, spiders, in terms of type, do have some differences which separate them depending on the biome they live in. This means that each of these different types do go down their own, individual alimentation lines.

Blood Crawlers feed mainly on flesh and blood. A zombie is an easy meal for a group of these bloated bloodsuckers. It is a spectacle, yet extremely gross, to watch them feed after their prey is tired out. No observer has ever been able to watch the process without vomiting, so we shall not recount it in detail. On the other hand, Jungle Creepers have found a way to eat jungle plants, fueling their poisonous capabilities. They mainly strive on the abundance of hornets in the Underground Jungle, as they can provide to the Creeper’s poison as well. Black Recluses and Wall Creepers are the boring two of the bunch. They prefer the traditional act of slinging a web and waiting. These webs are impressive to see anyhow, spanning the size of an average house. They aren’t too attractive to see when you’re stuck in one, so many cease to see the beauty of their construction.
