The Hardmode Challenge!

This is a challenge which I didn't make up. Basically, get a hardmode character, go and kill the WOF, then make a new character and put him in the new hardmode world. I've gone with Softcore.
Anyway, I've been doing this all day. Honestly, pearlwood is the greatest. It's as strong as iron, and you can get it by quickly ambling to the Hallow. I just spent two in-game days killing an Angry Nimbus with a wooden boomerang, and got nothing from it but some silver coins.
This thread is basically so you can talk about this challenge.

Done it before. Did it in 1.1 too.

In 1.1 it was much harder, because you couldn't get an awesome weapon just by killing a basic mob, such as Nimbus Clouds or Black Recluses (these and most others can be farmed with the right preparation if you exploit their AI). When I got a musket on that 1.1 run and was doing double digits against corruptors, I was filled with relief.

In 1.2, you need to remember to kill the mechanicals and Plantera before you start a new character too. Otherwise, hell and the Dungeon would actually be a safe haven, ironically.
