Linux A way to fix bad lag?

Hey all,

I've recently changed over from Windows to Arch Linux due to some problems with the latter. After a few months of not playing Terraria, I finally have the time to get back into it. Sadly, the game doesn't run very well, even though my machine was quite comfortable running it while on Windows. I get this weird, annoying lag while playing the game, like everything was covered in molasses, which only goes away after I downgrade the graphics and even then it doesn't help much.
I tried using different versions of Proton in order to see if the game runs more smoothly but none of them quite work. Proton 3.16-2 flat out doesn't work, complaining that I need the .Net 4.0 package (which I have), while 3.7 simply does nothing and runs the game as its usual laggy self. 4.2 throws a weird XNA related bug. 4.11-9 gives a similar error as well, something about "icomparer" having inconsistent results.
Is there any way to run the game smoothly like on native Windows (beyond installing windows again)? Do VMs work? Or is this just a lost cause and I should just get another HDD?

You shouldn't need proton to run Terraria on Linux - it supports Linux natively. I have no trouble running it on my Linux machine, without proton or wine or suchlike. My guess is the extra performance impact of those bits of software slow down your PC enough that it can't quite run Terraria.

Try playing without any additional things to get it to run, and also post your system specs.
