NPCs & Enemies Compendium of Chaos VI: New and Familiar Faces (Town NPCs)

Casey Howley

Steampunker
Hello Terraria Community! My name is Casey, and welcome to my Compendium of Chaos!
You might be wondering about the title of this thread. You see, I've spent the better part of a month tinkering with a great deal of ideas, and putting everything in one thread would be a bad idea.
So, this is to be a series of posts, with the connected title: Compendium of Chaos.

Part 6: New and Familiar Faces details ideas regarding Town NPCs, including new NPCs, changes to some NPC behaviors, and new or additional sold items from certain NPCs.
Some of these suggestions are from my friend Neb, so those will marked accordingly!

A friendly Martian sent to "make peace" with the Terrarian. Sells various Martian- and space-themed items.
Moves in after defeating the Martian Madness event for the first time.

Shimmered form resembles Marvin the Martian

Alchemist
Potion brewing enthusiast whose progress was stalled by a dangerous skeleton. Sells potions, with stock improving as the player progresses.
Moves in after defeating Skeletron, and while a player has three or more potions ingredients in their inventory.
Normal form resembles typical depictions of alchemists; leather apron, vials of liquid, protective goggles, etc.
Shimmered form resembles stereotypical depictions of mad scientists, or possibly Professor Membrane

Moves in after the player has defeated any boss.
Normal form wears some sort of heavy armor with a face-covering helmet.
Shimmered form resembles potentially Aragorn or Van Helsing

Tim
Everyone's favorite wandering skeleton sorcerer. May perform enchanting, or sell pre-hardmode magic-related items?
Moves in after defeating his enemy form at least once.
Looks like himself.
Shimmered form looks like his brother.

Lost Girl
She got terribly lost while exploring, for real. Sells items that aid the player in exploring their world.
Might also be a Nymph, but if she is, she's much more friendly.
Can be found underground after defeating a Nymph for the first time.
Resembles the Lost Girl, but is differentiated by the fact that she actually wears clothes. Transforms into a Nymph during Blood Moons and Solar Eclipses.

Disillusioned Cultist
Former cultist who managed to escape when things got too serious. An excellent fighter, and also has astronomical knowledge. Can predict Blood Moons and Solar Eclipses.
Moves in some time during Hardmode. Possibly after defeating Golem?
Predict, in this case, means they'll inform you about upcoming naturally occurring Blood Moons and Solar Eclipses.

Town Pets
A few exotic pet licenses have their made their way to the Zoologist! Might include:
Parrot License
Crab License
Shelly License
Flinx License
Mimic License

Inventory & Behaviors
This section details additional or modified NPC behaviors, and additional sold items. Specific selling criteria are notes when necessary.

NPCs with unique weapons will now sell them when particularly happy (if possible).
No more needing to commit murder!

Angler
Will now sell the player fishing gear after the player has obtained it from him at least once.

Demolitionist

Dye Trader
Can now be given dye ingredients. After giving him a certain number, he will begin selling that color of basic dye (Or will otherwise sell the player basic dye colors).
Inspired by the Thorium Cook's ingredients mechanic.
Will sell Strange Dyes to the player after having given them to the player at least once. The Strange Plants menu option will be replaced with a new Strange Dyes shop menu after giving the Dye Trader at least one Strange Plant, and while they aren't carrying any Strange Plants.
Will sell Prismatic Dye in the Strange Dyes shop after obtaining it from the Empress of Light at least once.

Goblin Tinkerer
New Stock:
Portable Cement Mixer
Brick Layer
DPS Meter
after defeating any 5 bosses

Guide
The Guide now offers a Tutorial option at the beginning of a new game, which replaces the Help option.
This tutorial is more hands on than the Guide's normal Help text, introducing new players to the game's core mechanics by guiding them to build a house, workbench, and furnace.
After the tutorial has been completed (or skipped), the Guide goes back to giving the Help option as normal.

Seems okay, I like a lot of the tweaks. Hard disagree with the potion seller though.

And the lost girl, tim, and cultist seem unnecessary, and an odd choice as NPCs unless they have something new. Maybe the cultist could summon solar eclipses, but tablets already do that, or maybe start lunar events, but killing them already does that too. Not sure what you mean by "predict".

Thanks for the feedback!

I understand this. Definitely a polarizing suggestion to be sure. The intention is, of course, to provide marginally easier access to potions, at the cost of money. And, of course, some potions would likely be excluded, pushed significantly later into progression, and/or be notably expensive.

Also valid! But, Terraria is an odd game, so I was embracing that (and the thought that some enemy-based NPCs would be interesting), when I came up with them!

Not sure what you mean by "predict".
And this was something I should've clarified further. (And will do so in the main post following this reply)
So, to do so here: "Predict" in this case means they would simply tell you if there's an upcoming natural Blood Moon or Solar Eclipse, potentially giving you time to prepare instead of being surprised.

The Martian I like it, is consistent with other NPC spawn conditions

Now, about the others NPC is that make unnecessary various Terraria's mechanics as Plant ingredients, farm for Boss/Event Summons

For example, the Disillusioned Cultist is useless, because Events are not set up the previous day but have a % chance to occur at the beginning of the day/night or per tick in game

General
NPCs will now use Recall Potions to move to newly assigned homes if they're too far away or can't reach them.
NPC teleport automatically to their rooms at night if you aren't seeing them

Unless you are referring to make that the reason why they go back that quickly(?

Demolitionist
New Stock:
Explosives are expensive in Pre HM, and Gel isn't hard to obtain at all

The idea here was to take an existing mechanic and give it a bit of extra detail to make it feel more natural!
