Ah, early hardmode. Its actually really hard, considering the armor and defense most people usually have depending on class (Mage gets lowest defense behind ranger and melee) Here is a guide on how to be a good mage. (armor and accesorie and weapon wise)
-Mage
Early hardmode, your best bet is to build a underground base (its the same for melee and ranged) As your main functionality and npc homes. In the armor category, theres much to choose from. So first, do not get the cobalt armor, just skip to mythril. Mythril has more defense and has better bonuses. After Mythril get adamantite. Then Adamantite to Chlorophyte, then Chlorophyte to Spectre/Nebula armor (depending if your mobile,3ds,and ps3, and xbox 360, or PC.) Pretty straight forward. For the hotbar, I recommend Having the Golden Shower, Crystal Shard Book(sorry cant remember name) Maybe a summon like the tempest staff, and a terra blade or Meowmere or StarWrath?/SunWrath? (also get any other magic weapon besides the golden shower and crystal shard books, like the Razorpine) Cant remember that one either. You can also use the horsemans blade as well. For accesories, you need mobility, defense, and to easily regain mana. Maybe 2 Mobility Modifiers and 3 Defense modifiers, And for the actuall accessories, The Ankh Shield, the Mana flower, Any type of wings, NInja gear for even more mobility (or the celestial cuffs/magic cuffs for more mana, depending on your version) Or, if you want to inflict some debuffs with melee (if you wanna) The Fire Gauntlet. Or you can use anything else really. Just make the accesories suit your playstyle.
