What is Mana?

Mana, as most people know it, is a form of energy used to power magic. We use it in our everyday lives, and it makes more difficult tasks simpler. It feels like we couldn’t live without it, but in truth, some do. We seem to take mana-and it’s counterpart, magic-for granted. Rarely do we ask “where does it come from,” or “how does it work?” These are questions I look to answer here.

Mana has a couple different names, such as “Spirit,” and “Soul”. Mana is used as the energy source used to power magic, however it’s second use is to quickly heal wounds. This second feature of Mana comes up a lot more often than you may first assume. The way it works is that every time you get a wound, your Mana is spent supercharging your cells in what we call “Mana Acceleration.” It does this to try to heal the wound quicker than before, which is why a lot of us are such fast healers. Of course, Mana Acceleration is dependent on how much mana a person has, meaning that someone with a high mana count would heal significantly faster than someone without one.
Mana does not flow through your body like cells, as some believe it to. Instead all your built up mana resides in the “Mana sac”, an organ connected to your heart that stores all of your generated Mana. Although the mana sac is what contains your mana, it is not what generates it. Instead, that job is reserved for the soul. The soul generates your mana and then delivers it to the mana sac where it can be stored.
Not all creatures have these requirements however. Blood bears, for example, do not possess a mana sac, to instead fit in a protective casing around it’s vital organs. Because of this, a blood bear, and creatures like it, are unable to hold mana. Instead, the mana that is created by its soul is released out into the world, and can be gathered with the right tools. That is why witches tend to pick familiars without a mana sac, so that they can absorb the mana that they emit. It is possible, due to a birth defect, to be born without a mana sac, no matter what species it is. It is non hereditary, and will usually only happen if the propper precautions aren’t taken during birth.

Mana sickness and the Augmentation of Mana

With mana and magic being as powerful as it is, it should come as no surprise that people would attempt to augmentate is. Some are relatively harmless, with things such as trinkets made to hold mana like a mana sac, however it was taken too far, to the point of causing mana sickness. Mana sickness is an illness caused by the over use and/or weakening of your mana sac. The mana sickness, although treatable, can be lethal in severe cases. During the mana sickness, your soul contiues to generate mana and deliver it to your mana sac like normal, however since it is damaged, the mana leaks out into your body causing less than desirable effects. This happens because your body is still registering that your mana sac is there, and so is not ejecting the mana like it should.
Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: Severe heartburn, migraines, sparadic moments of numbness around the body, discolored skin, loss of appetite, vomiting, and increased physical abilities. If you are expeirincing these symptoms, it is important that you see a doctor immediately so that you can receive proper treatment. If this happens repeatedly, it means that your mana sac is badley damaged, and may have to be removed.
The main cause of mana illnesses is mana augmentation, by trying to obtain more mana than healthy, or trying to expand your mana sac. In both cases, this causes the mana sac to tear, resulting in the sickness. It is highly ill advised to use any item/potion that promises you more mana, and if yousee or hear of anybody selling these, make sure to report them to the propper authorities for selling illegal goods.
Please remember that there is a difference between items that enhance your magical abilities, and those that increase your maximum mana. Mana augmentations can be highly dangerous, which is why under the roof treatey, items made to grow your mana supply are banned from the marketplace.

Mana Potions

While a Mana potion may sound like a good idea on the surface, in reality, it’s side effects can be straight up lethal. Mana potions are created out of glowing mushrooms, and actually contain no mana in them. Instead, the mushrooms act as a replacement for mana when using magic. This in itself is not an issue as studies show that the mushrooms are not poisonous, however, the danger of them comes when they try to patch up an injury. Since it’s replacing the role of mana, the mushrooms must also speed up the healing of wounds by ejecting some of itself into the bloodstream. This is normal for mana, as it’s designed to travel thro the bloodstream when needed, however, the mushrooms are not, and can sometimes clog the bloodstream.
When this issue was brought to attention the manufacturers quickly created a thinner potion that solved this problem, however, it came at a price. In order to thin the solution, they had to add an acid to it to break down the mushroom. The acid isn’t harmful, so the mana potion continued to sell. Then, one day, reports started coming back of people who used the potions regularly suffering from intence hallusinations, insanity, and burning lungs. The cause seemed to be that the combination of the acid and the mushrooms created a gas that makes the user hallusinate, and the burning lungs comes from the gass entering your lungs. After this reveal, the mana potions were given strict selling regulations and dosage.
Witches

Just like it is possible to be born without a mana sac, it is also possible for the opposite to happen. In a very rare case, it is possible for the manasac to be larger than it is supposed to, and devour the heart. In this case, two things can happen: The baby can die, resulting in a miscarrage, or the mana sac will take over the roll of the heart. This is what creates a witch.
The effects that this has on the body has not been fully explored as there has not been many tests as witches are hard to come by, and are even scarcer due to the witch hunts. What we do know is that instead of pumping blood throughout the body, he mana sac instead pumps out mana, causing the veins to appear as purple. This seems to cause a lack in physical strength, but testing is required to make a concrete conclusion.
Due to the mana sacs size, and that mana is being pumped through the body, their magical abilities can be much stronger than average. It is assumed that they would also have an increased healing rate, however this is not confirmed. Testing is required to determine any other affects this may have on the body.

A very interesting piece of literature. I can imagine, living in a fantasy world with mana and all, and someone like you who'd be a doctor, publishing this book and getting it put in the medical section of several libraries. Honestly, I'd love to read a full book like that.
