The Axe
In the beginning of July 2023 a great debate began between two groups here on the Terraria Community Forums. On one side was Team
, also known as the Tree Cult. Led by @Redigit, this group stood behind the icon of Terraria and a symbol of nature. On the other side was Team 
, also known as the Axecociation of Axes or the Cult of Cenaxe. Led by @Nike Leon and @Cenx, this group rallied behind the tool that every terrarian begins their adventure with and uses to start shaping their world. To show allegiance, forum members added the symbol of their team to the end of their username, and intense (but friendly) debates began in this thread and profile posts.This is where the history of the Tree vs Axe War is documented. The side each TCF member took, personal opinions, heated arguments, and important moments that took place outside of this thread are all recorded here.
July 2nd, 2023
The war began when Redigit brought his Tree Cult from Twitter over to the Forums. Shortly after forum moderator Nike Leon added an axe to the end of his username and started the Axe Cult. Forum members began to change their usernames and debates began across the site.
July 3rd, 2023
Nike Leon tried to bribe people into joining Team Axe and Redigit committed "treeson" by temporarily joining Team Axe.

This day began with Redigit sharing a 4th of July meme with uncensored profanity (which is against forum rules). Nike Leon took the opportunity to replace the meme with a gif of a swinging axe. Then a thread was created, seemingly by Redigit, all about how much he loves axes. In actuality, the thread was created by Nike Leon.
In retaliation for being defamed, Redigit banned all axes from the forums and any members who broke the rule got a joke warning. Redigit and Nike Leon also used their moderator privileges to edit each other's profiles, and there was plenty of back and forth between the two sides.

While I did create trees in Terraria, they're really only there for Terrarians to swing their axe at and gather wood. The axe is the first tool most Terrarians use to tame the wilderness and make their first home. Even the pickaxe has axe in its name. And the only good hammers are the hamaxes...

This day began with Nike Leon being temporarily banned from the forums by Redigit. A couple of hours later Nike Leon returned and Cenx came to the forums, joining Team Axe. She donned the name "CenAxe" and proceeded to ban Redigit from the Forums.
In Redigit's absence, @ChippyGaming became the leader of Team Trees and asked Cenx what Team Axe had to offer. She answered by sharing a spoiler and promising to continue fighting for more Summoner items in Terraria. This swayed many members over to Team Axe. Additionally, many prominent community members began to take sides. Eventually, Redigit's ban expired and he returned to the forums.
And lastly, new emotes were added for forum members to use.

Redigit threatened to not release 1.4.5 if Team Axe didn't accept a truce. Redigit also created a thread all about loving trees and began to edit the profile posts of Team Axe members, replacing the original post with tree puns and images of trees.

In response to Redigits tree-loving thread, Nike Leon created a thread all about beautiful wood creations. Redigit also hid a spoiler in the forums which started a race to see which team would find it first. After only two hours the spoiler was found by me, @Russ Guss Doodles, and Team Axe won the race. Finally at the end of the day Redigit once again proposed a spruce (truce).

In response to Redigits tree-loving thread, Nike Leon created a thread all about beautiful wood creations. Redigit also hid a spoiler in the forums which started a race to see which team would find it first. After only two hours the spoiler was found by me, @Russ Guss Doodles, and Team Axe won the race. Finally at the end of the day Redigit once again proposed a spruce (truce).

The results of the poll came in and the majority of Terrarians found the terms of the Spruce axe-ceptable. The war had to come to an end and both sides had won! Everyone began to celebrate the spruce and a news article was released covering the war.

The Terraria 1.4.5 update gets some very cool new axe-themed items as a peace offering following a light-hearted forum war between its lead developers.
