This is kind of the thing most people wouldn't agree with me on, but...I suppose you could have a dimension where everything is a lot scarier, like for instance no daytime, torches are a little dimmer, monsters are stronger, and then you could have a boss that teleports, creates static, whatever...And then when he kills you, make the screen go completely dark, with his face faded in the background...
