Console Console Update Timing

Thanks for the info, it's what a lot of people in forum needed to know!

I do have one question that's probably in everyone's mind..relating to #5 on your list: with the constant worry of memory issues on last Gen consoles, can you give us a general indication as to whether or not last Gen will have enough memory to eventually get 1.3 update in the future?

Personally, I've put two solid years into a single world on last Gen, but worry that the lack of memory on last gen will keep us from playing a complete version of Terraria.

Bottom line, will last gen consoles even be able to hypothetically handle the 1.3 update, or should we look into other versions such as pc to maximize our Terraria experience?
In my opinion I think the Xbox 360 might be able to make it as it still runs fine on the current update with all the new stuff it has despite the minor bugs. I use an Xbox 360 slim that I`ve had for about 4 years now, (to the point where the warrenty has expired), and other than replacing a few worn out controllers and AC adapters the console itself still works fine. I`ve been maintaining it to the best of my ability going as far as an attempt to open it to clean the dust out, (Had to stop when I found out that I would need a Jeweler`s screwdriver to remove the rest of the casing so I had to content myself with cleaning the dust out through the side panels instead).

Lol it's less about console maintenance and more memory and ram capacity. Fingers crossed though

I was wondering about 360/PS3 myself as far as updates are concerned. At some point they may hit a wall where they simply cannot handle more content. According to Gearbox a few years ago, they ran into that issue with Borderlands 2; they wanted to keep adding new gear, missions, new areas to explore, but they ran into memory issues on the console side of things and decided not to make more things. Time will tell, though, as I do hope the 360/PS3 will be able to handle not just the new bosses/biomes that 1.3 will bring, but also the ~600 new items.

I know, we don't even have this update yet, and pondering whether or not the older consoles can even handle the rest of the content shouldn't really even be on the table for discussion at this point; yet I think the apprehensions are certainly there.

I know. I`m just saying that even my old Xbox 360 could probably handle any future updates just fine.

Clancy 1.3 increased the base system requirements on PC version. The fact that current updates run fine on your 360 is credit to Engine's efforts to optimize the code. But considering the leader for the console ports had this to say
5) Tapping on the limits...on the previous generation console and Vita, we are really stretching the hardware limitations to keep Terraria running. The Vita-crashes that someone mentioned were (and are) a memory problem. Terraria is not hard on your CPU per se, but it is hard on memory...and the only way to address that problem is to remove the strain from memory and put it on the CPU...unfortunately the Vita is also the one with the most CPU strain problems already.
don't be shocked if they prove incapable of handling the major update that was 1.3.

Someone who don't have pc should buy pc as well so i think that buying pc just to play terraria is very bad idea. I have ps4 so i play terraria on PlayStation 4.
If you don't have a PC, why do you have a console? Consoles are expensive and fully an entertainment systems, Terraria can run on basically any computer so I highly doubt anyone interested it in the first place wouldn't have one.

Good day, Terrarians!

It’s been a while since we last spoke about the progress surrounding the console versions of Terraria, and with Q1 drawing to a close, now is as good a time as any. As so many of you have rightly made note of over the past few weeks, we had originally targeted an update solely focused on adding the missing 1.2.4.1 items with an estimated timing of Q1. Well, in short, it’s taken a bit longer than we expected. This is primarily because we expanded the scope of what was being worked on. Let us share a bit more about that below.

First of all, we wanted to take some time to address some of the long-standing stability issues across all the versions: tweaks to the network game to promote a more robust experience, annoying bugs squashed, optimizations made, and so on. We know this doesn't always look as exciting in a list as compared to "new content", but we are confident that everyone will feel the benefits of this work. Why now? Well, we had to pick a good time to do this, and it made the most sense to make those fixes now rather than submitting the missing content and then stepping back to work on these fixes. Though it did admittedly delay the missing content, it will get the fixes in your hands a good deal sooner than if we had broken those out separately. We felt that was the overall best approach.

Second of all, of course, is the new and missing content. The Stylist is coming to town, so you can look forward to changing your appearance. Speaking of appearance: visible accessories are included, along with new vanity and dye slots. The experience of buying items is also streamlined. We’re also hard at working cramming in all the missing 1.2.4.1 items. There’s hundreds of things so we won't list them all, but here’s a selection:

Wommanquin; Shroomite Digging Claw; Venom Staff; Julia Butterly Jar; Super Mana Potion; Celestial Emblem; Celestial Cuffs; Mining Potion; Builder Potion; Bee Armour; Hornet Staff; Spider Armour and Staff; Optic Staff; Pressure Track; Slime Hook; Sticky Grenade... the list goes on. We’ve also got a load of furniture and new block types.

(We posted a more full list a while back - you can check this post to learn more)

Of course, with all of that said, you guys want to know when you can get your hands on this stuff! Our development work is scheduled to run to the end of April. Assuming everything looks good at that point, we will submit to Sony/Microsoft, and the update will appear a couple of weeks later after we’ve passed platform holder certification. We fully understand that the delay won't make for happy news for a lot of people, but this stability work needs to be done sometime - and, again, we would rather take that extra time to do it now than to send you content now and then have to wait even longer for those fixes. We certainly hope you can all understand and appreciate the logic behind that decision.

Other quick news items:

3DS Update: will likely hit at a similar time frame as the console timing above. We have not shared what all we are including for this one - but the plan is for this to cover fixes to the most pressing issues as well as bringing the first post-launch new content to the 3DS version of Terraria! We will share more details at a later date.

Wii U Terraria: This has taken longer than anticipated, however, we are on the brink of submission to Nintendo and this is expected to be available digitally at the end of May.

I'm happy that there is more word about what's going on.
One thing I'd love to see if the ability to favourite item that are in your inventory.

I'd hope the new PS Vita firmware update helps the stability out more. That and if we can't have 1.3 on the Vita then have some of it's features similar to 3DS or better. I still would love an updated Pirate Invasion and the new music that was added to hell, pirate invasion, goblins...I was hoping we'd reach 1.3 on Vita but sadly it doesn't look like we'll get there without adding more problems to the mix. Vita had a good run though

Exactly what I'm saying but some people have to get upset over it.
well i too get upset. To wait 3 months and then wait 2 more is so unnecessary. we will by then have waited almost half a year for an update 10x smaller than 1.3 which took a year for an update of that size.;(

Nope, calling shenanigans. This has become a rather unfortunate SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) from 505 Games. "We wanted to do our jobs, but it's to hard." As a programmer myself if I tried half of the excuses you guys have used over the last couple years I would of been out of a job. You promise (and yes, saying something will be done is a promise in the business world) updates on a specific time frame, and then inevitably delay. You tell us we'll get all the content of a specific version only to leave things out and or missing. You leave obvious broken game mechanics in limbo with the only response in most cases being that you'll fix it in the next update which will come out whenever we d@mn well feel like it. You left the PsVita version of the game broken by constant crashing for a year (which still crashes I might add), without so much as an acknowledgement that it was a huge issue. You've done your best at stringing Terraria's console fanbase on with the "We're sorry" c&@p since before the huge world destroying debacle that was the 1.2 update. You have literally taken the console version of one of the PC's most beloved games of the past half decade (Based upon Steam sales figures constantly raking amazingly) and made it an update nightmare/laughing stock. I'm past i'm sorry's at this point, I want to see heads roll! If I was Re-logic I would of chucked your publishing rights contract into the garbage, sued you on the basis of making a mockery out of an established franchise, and never looked back. May whatever diety's you pray to have mercy on your souls for taking something as inherently holy as the Terraria name and dragging it through the mud.
finally SOMEONE who feels the same way as me.

Very insightful information regarding the console's update

It's been a while since I've posted, but I had to come on and thank you for giving us this information regarding the update. I've been checking my game occasionally to see what was going on every once in a while, and while some may be frustrated about the hold back, I have to say I appreciate all the teams working on the console version who make the decision to give us quality updates instead of just rushing out content that could backfire.
:dryadpassionate:

I can only hope that if they manage to get the current build of Terraria finished and running fine on the Vita that they do add smaller features of 1.3 to the mix for it. at least music and smaller chest storage features and ability to use weapons and items while on minecarts. possibly add different types of minecarts. Ocram cart maybe?

The shroomite digging claws, venom staff and pressure tracks are all ready in the game. Is the update changing their crafting recipes because me and my friend went and got all the ingredients legitimately and made the things legitimately

Iam like hyped and every time i come from school i throw my backpack to the walls and open my console and look is the update relased yet and then says no updates and then im Like crying baby 1 like if u cri everytiem
