CraftedNightmare Here!

Official Terrarian
Hey guys Crafty here!

Ever had trouble with spawning the helpful (well, most of them) NPCs?
...

I'm guessing no one. But I made this guide just incase anyone has problems!

Here's the complete guide! If you want to know what requirements are needed to spawn the NPC, just click the SPOILER with the NPC's role.
NOTE: ALL NPCs need a house to move into, except Travelling Merchant.

The guide is the first NPC you will meet. He gives out helpful tips, crafting recipes and a good bait for zombies. He is also needed later on for a sacrifice.

Spawning:
Basically, there's no requirement to spawn him, as long as you have a suitable house for him.

The Merchant is probably one of the most helpful NPCs. He sells basic utilities like bug nets, basic ammo, potions and ropes.

Spawning:
-You need 50 or more silver coins for him to move in. You also can get him to move in as long as 2 players or more have 50 silver coins combined (E.g: 12 Silver coins + 38 Silver coins)

The nurse is a unique NPC. She provides health in exchange for money. The less health you have, the more you need to heal. The prices are cheap, even in early game. In hardmode, she isn't really needed, but she's always there to help out. She does not sell anything

Spawning:
-You need to have increased your health by 20 with a Crystal Heart
-The merchant has moved in

The painter is probably the only NPC that sells the most. He mostly sells Paint cans and Tier 1 painting tools. He also sells paintings, depending on the moon phase, biome and mode.

Spawning:
-At least 3 or more NPCs have already moved in. For example: The Merchant, Nurse and Guide have moved in.

The Dye Trader is probably the less useful NPC, except when you want to look stylist in dyes! He sells the Dye Vat and the basic Silver Dye

Spawning:
-You have a dye or an item that can be crafted into a dye

The Demolitionist sells explosive items, like Bombs, Grenades and Dynamite. Useful items for mining, removing excess land or blowing up just because!

Spawning:
-You have an explosive in your INVENTORY, for example, a bomb. Putting it in the chest DOESN'T get him to move in
-You have the Merchant moved in

The Dryad is the representative of the Purity. A land free of Good, and Evil. She sells Nature and Corrupt/Crimson items on blood moon. She also tells the status of how much good and evil you have on your world.

Spawning:
-You have defeated a boss that isn't the following:
Lepus
King Slime
Wall of Flesh

The Arms Dealer is one of the most useful and important NPCs you will meet. He sells basic ammo for guns, the Minishark and several gun equipment.

Spawning:
-You have bullets, or a gun that can shoot bullets

The Party Girl loves to party! Literally! She sells funny items like the Bubble Machine, Bubble Wand, Fireworks and other Party-related stuff

Spawning:
-She has a 2% chance of spawning when you have 7 or more NPCs moved in. It happens rarely, so patience is the key.

The Stylist is a unique NPC. She both sells stuff like Hair Dyes, and gives you different hair styles and colours.

Spawning:
-You freed her in the Spider Nest. It's a rare chance, so be patient

The Angler is the newest, and another unique NPC. Instead of selling stuff, he rewards you stuff after completed the required fishing quest he gives out daily.

Spawning:
-You wake him up at either side of the world. He has a rare chance of spawning, at any time, so be patient.

The Goblin Tinkerer is the most useful, and brutal NPC. He sells the Tinkerer's Workshop (that adds the ability to combine certain accessories), and he reforges weapons, tools and accessories. The reforge is random, and it costs a lot. So have luck by your side, and you might get your favourite weapon to have Legendary/Mythical/Unreal/Demonic.

Spawning:
-He has been freed in the underground
-The Goblin Army has been defeated

The Witch Doctor sells the Imbuing Station, where you can craft Flasks that can help your Melee Experience. He also sells the Blowgun, Water Fountains and Summoner Equipment

-Spawning:
-Queen Bee is defeated

The Clothier sells loads of vanity items. Yep, that's all, pretty much all.

Spawning:
-Skeletron is defeated

The Mechanic sells wires and other mechanism-related items.

Spawning:
-Freed from the Dungeon

Now for Hardmode NPCs. These NPCs spawn when the requirements are met, and the world is in Hardmode.

The Wizard is an NPC all wizards want! He sells Greater Mana Potions, Music Boxes and Magic-related items

Spawning:
-He is freed from Cavern

The Truffle sells Mushroom-related items and the Autohammer during Post-Plantera

Spawning:
-You have created an above ground mushroom biome
-A suitable house has been built in the CREATED mushroom biome

The Pirate sells Pirate related items, as well as the Cannon!

Spawning:
-The Pirate Invasion has been defeated

The Steampunker is one snazzy girl. Wait, going offtopic. Sorry. She sells the Clentaminator (used to remove/spread the good/evil/mushrooms), the Teleporter, Cogs and other steampunk-related stuff

Spawning:
-At least ONE mechanical boss is defeated.

The cyborg is a distant traveller from the future. He sells the Proximity Mine Launcher (launches mines), Rockets and Nanites (used to make Nanite Flask, confuses enemies)

Spawning:
-Plantera has been defeated

Event NPCs. These NPCs spawn at their own time

The Travelling Merchant travels all around the world, and at the time he wants it, he comes to your world, and sells random items, like the Pulse Bow, Dynasty Wood and other stuff.

Spawning:
-Technically, he spawns randomly during morning hours (4:30 am to 12:00 in Game Time).
-At least 2 NPCs have moved in

Yes, he is real! Santa sells the Santa Costume, Christmas Lights and Christmas Trees as well as their decorations

Spawning:
-You have defeated the Frost Legion
-Your date is set between December 15th-31st (Real Life Time)

The Old Man is a unique NPC. He doesn't sell anything, but he is required to spawn Skeletron for the first time.

Spawning:
He spawns at world gen. He respawns ONLY if you have never defeated Skeletron in the world. If you have, he will not return.

Hope this guide helps you! Stay crafty!

A nice compiled summarized list of all the NPC spawning requirements already listed on the wiki.

But the guide is called "Guide to NPC Housing" not "Guide to NPC Spawning" so I'm really confused. If this a guide for how NPCs spawn or a guide for NPC housing and what housing is and how to build effective houses or what?

This is basically the requirements to get them to move in.

question regarding the Truffle: he needs a mushroom biome and a house inside to spawn the first time around. However I really hate having that Biome near my other houses. After his first spawn, can I remove the mushroom biome, or is it always required in order to keep him?

I am afraid it is always required :guidesad: Maybe you should move his house away (Up in the sky is good because the background doesn't change and the mobs don't spawn)

eh, in my current world thats not possible ;__;.. My world spawned on a very high altitude already. Currently if I jump with rocketboots I already nearly reach space. I guess I'll have to work around this.

It isn't the hight of your world :guidestraightface: if you can find a sky island build on that... thats the sort of hight that you have to have to stop the background changing.

Then wyverns are a problem if you want to hang out with Truffle.

@Volt since your world is already high in altitude, shy not build his home underground?
