Game Crashes when saving/auto saving - 1.4.4.1

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you launch the game from the exe? I just updated my system so it's completely up to date and I was going to test the game with those updates when I got off work. But I definitely want to give this a try too just in case! I haven't been able to play the game at all since the new update due to this issue:/
right click on the game in your steam library. click properties. click on local files. then click on browse and you'll be looking at your terraia game folder. just double click on "Terraria.exe". if the games works for you then you can simplify this by right clicking on the file and clicking create shortcut. then you can move that shortcut to your desktop

I've also been dealing with the crashes. I have noticed some things though.

1. It only affects the character's saved status. All impacts affecting the world (Destroyed/placed blocks, items moved in/out of chests, etc) remain saved after the crashes.
2. It doesn't seem to crash in multiplayer. I played for about 4 hours on a world hosted by someone else, no crash. Host my own world via server. No crash.
3. Running from the exe does seem to fix the problem, as Niberolla mentioned. No apparent reason, though.

So at least there are temp fixes and multiplayers aren't affected.

So far, things I have tried that have NOT worked:
-Turning off Steam Overlay
-Turning off Steam Cloud Saving
-Running the game as admin
-Running the game in fullscreen vs windowed
-Creating an exception in Windows Defender
-Creating an exception in Controlled Folder Access
-Changing the game's save directory
-Turning off autosave (save & exit still crashes)
-Verifying file integrity
-Reinstalling the game
-Making a new player and world

I just want to play the game 😭
we have the same problem here, :red: this!

I didn't have much luck opening in exe. But I did try playing in multiplayer under the host option, worked very well I didn't experience any issues for the time that I was playing it luckily. Looks like it's a good temporary fix at least for now

Okay, so I did end up getting another crash even after the Windows update. Guess I just had a run of good luck last night.

But, I can corroborate that playing in multiplayer seems to be preventing the crashes so far.

Opening the game in exe helped for a while, but now it's crashing on manual save again. Nothing I have tried has solved the issue.

Have you tried running the game in multiplayer? It worked for me last night and it seems to be working for others as well. Hopefully it continues to work until there is a fix

I can also confirm that multiplayer does not crash for now, but I will update if this changes. Does running directly from .exe actually work for everyone?

It did not work for me, but yes multiplayer seems to be working at the moment

yes, probably multiplayer could prevent crashes I guess, still do not see any crashes from now on...

If there are any errors I will update you guys ASAP!

Anyone who is experiencing the issue and is online at the moment and willing to help me test fixes, please message me on Discord (Chicken Bones#6864)

EDIT: so i tried running the exe as admin and now it's working again. this is a very strange bug lmao

Due to the solution being solved by using the terraria exe. I thought maybe by turning off steam cloud saves, It would stop the save crashing. So far no crashes but I didn't play long enough to be a good sample but it might have fixed it.

I have turned off my steam cloud save prior to playing in multiplayer, but I still was experiencing issues. Multiplayer is the only fix that has been working for me so far. I have plans to play a bunch more in these coming days so I hope that this still remains true

I'm online now and can be free for the next 4 hours or so. I added you on discord, Parmesean#0001
shoot me a message there and I'll get back to you ASAP - would love to help getting this fixed!

I'm also experiencing the crashes on autosaves (death of me, death of a mob).

Windows 11, Terraria build 1.4.4.2. I never had this issue before 1.4.4.x

I posted a thread a couple days ago about this, and got directed here for further guidance. Three things I noticed last night:

1) I played for hours without issue with a new character and a new Constant world (i.e. both generated in 1.4.4.2), but after I took that new character to a pre-1.4.4 Constant world to grab something, my game crashed with the same error we all keep getting in our logs (Exception: System.IO.IOException: The system cannot find message text for message number 0x%1 in the message file for %2) after I returned to the new world and died to an explosive trap underground. Before I went to the old world with the new character, the new character had died... um, a lot... in the new world without any crashes.

2) Now that I think of it, I remember my crashes happening right as the game's announced something to me in the lower-left of the screen (e.g. Goblin Tinkerer moving in, death text from the explosive trap). Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

3) After the explosive trap crash, I tried the multiplayer workaround (Steam multiplayer disabled, password-locked), to great success... the funny thing was, Windows Defender Firewall blocked the outgoing connection, so my "multiplayer" game never made it online. But hey — if it lets me enjoy the update while we wait, I'm not complaining.
