how do i get strong enough to beat the twins in early hardmode???

Terrarian
hello!! i am a fairly new player in that i picked the game up when i was a kid but only got properly into it in November last year.

cuz of that, this is my first time actually getting into hardmode and i’ve noticed that a lot of features (mainly the steampunker and, ergo, the clentaminator) are locked until you beat the first mechanical boss.

with the equipment i have right now (full adamantite armour and the breaker sword and well as a few summons) i just BARELY squeaked by on queen slime, so im thinking i have NO chance with the twins.

have you got any tips on how i could actually feasibly beat the twins at this stage? they’re the easiest mechanical boss as far as i know and I’d really like to stop the corruption infecting my jungle so it doesn’t get messed up after i purify it :)

sorry if this is a dumb question and thanks for any help in advance!!!

p.s: I’m doing mainly melee at this stage but im totally open to trying new classes- whatever works best on the twins 😭

The "easiest" mech to face first is player and damage archetype dependent. The Twins are a fairly straightforward encounter if you have good mobility and a source of ranged damage, but some Melee players opt to go for The Destroyer first due to the ability to attack multiple segments at once easily and deal large damage while it coils.

I'm assuming you're on a modern version of the game - very little of this advice works or even exists in older versions of the game on old-gen console, etc.

Breaker Blade may prove itself woefully inadequate against The Twins, though, or any mechs. I'll try to avoid overwhelming you, but some options you can consider for now:

- Adamantite Sword and Adamantite Glaive are good enough for fighting off common enemies and will serve you a little better than the Breaker Blade will until you can beat a mech and make an Excalibur.

If you'd like a ranged attack while still playing with melee damage scaling armor and equipment, you can hunt for Clowns in a Blood Moon for the Bananarang, a boomerang-type weapon that has multiple projectiles able to be in flight at once.

If you don't want to wait around for a Blood Moon or don't have any Bloody Tears to use looking for a Bananarang, The Chain Guillotines from Corrupt Mimics and Flying Knife from Hallowed Mimics can also give you a ranged option, but the Knife has a slight learning curve to use it.

The Shadowflame Knife dropped by Goblin Warlocks in the Hardmode Goblin Army invasion can open up some funny options as well - combining it with the Magma Stone, Frost Armor, and a Flask of Cursed Flames will deal multiple types of damage over time at once. This is not particularly the strongest option, and it won't work on all bosses, but it's definitely an option to get your foot in the door and patch up accuracy issues.

Frost Armor also allows you to get an extra damage bonus on ranged weapons as well, making it a decent armor.

sorry if this is a dumb question
A request for help is not a dumb question. My own views of game progress can be a little warped by my more patient play sessions giving me more time to farm for items, though, so I recommend waiting for more opinions from other users as well.

Also, don't worry too much about the Jungle being corrupted, as it tends to do a good job protecting itself in modern days due to its size and Chlorophyte's ability to purify corrupt blocks. If you're on an older version of the game off old-gen console though, it could be a more pressing issue.

If I had to say, Bananarang is the single best pre mech melee weapon.

wow- could not have anticipated this detailed of a response so soon!

thank you so so much for your speed and your input! i will get after that bananarang asap and farm some mimics for the chain guillotine- i have so many souls so i could make a bunch of keys.

again, thanks so much! this was so incredibly detailed and is just another example of why i love the terraria community! have a lovely day 👏

Do note that one or the other should suffice for just beating a mech, there's no need to worry about getting both as after you can defeat Destroyer, you can make a weapon that functions similar to the Bananarang.

Getting an early Bananarang is just a sort of equalizer that means you don't need to look for a Shadowflame Knife or Chain Guillotine.

ahh okay! good to know- i think i’ll focus on getting the chain guillotine as im still in the process of moving my npcs away from spawn and i don’t want any (more…) of them to die LMAO

you don't really need to worry that much about the jungle getting corrupted; you can purify whatever blocks get corrupted at a later date and they'll be just fine. in fact, i think jungle grass blocks (grass that grows on mud blocks) still qualify as "jungle blocks" if they get corrupted, but i'm not sure about that

if your playing summoner, you can farm the boss for the firecracker, thats served me well. You can also get a summoner emblem and try to get the blade staff from queen slime. But its up to you.

try to have a summon on hand just for the slight extra damage, even if its just something like the imp staff.

try to kill the one that shoots fireballs first because he is harder to kill and it makes it easier to kill the laser eye one later. try to kill them one at a time, too, because it is a pain in the butt when they are both in their second phase.

also have a small box to camp in at the edge of the arena you use because when the laser eye one gets to his second phase he stops charging alltogether and inside a box he can't damage you with his lasers so you can sit and heal up so long as day doesn't appear.

if you get your hands on some projectile sword or other ranged melee weapon that would be great because you can now fight at a safe distance.

i would recommend the destroyer first because if you can dodge the lasers well enough, deal with the probes, and also avoid the main body, then great because you can get some massive damage on the segments, and all the sudden the 80,000 health doesn't seem like that much.

Use either Meteor Staff or Daedalus Stormbow to have consistent damage.

Also, what world evil do you have? What accessories are you using?

a lot of people like ranged because it has a high dps while also still having relatively high defense. you can choose, but if you are willing to take up a little bit of an additional challenge, do some research and take ranged. otherwise, melee is a great choice because it is super easy to use.

oh okay! i saw a video that said purifying corrupted jungle changed it from mud to dirt but maybe that’s outdated 🤷

i’ll look into it! tbh my main problem has been the amount of damage i’ve been taking so ranged might be better for limiting that

i’ll try for the firecracker- i do have another queen slime summon as well so i could probably just do both and see what i get

omg yes completely forgot about the meteor staff! i am slightly reticent to farm more chests because a corrupt chest killed my nerdy slime :( I WILL AVENGE YOU SIVGARD

i have corruption and off the top of my head my accessories are: fairy wings, magiluminescence, mana regen band, fleeting anklet of the wind and i think a titan glove? im more sure on the first four as i recently switched some out

yep, that's only present in the old, outdated versions that are no longer being updated, although it did get one aspect wrong; it's not purifying it that changes mud to dirt, it's getting corrupted in the first place that changes mud to dirt

It goes Mud > Corrupt/Crimson Dirt > Dirt

If taken damage is a concern, you can also consider reforging your accessories to have the Warding prefix.

There are also various consumable items that raise your defense and even grant passive health regeneration. Combining a food item buff, a Regeneration Potion, and an Ironskin Potion will greatly increase your overall defenses.
