Hello, Terrarians,
In the coming days, we will be removing the feature that allows people to register/login to Terraria Community Forums with their Steam account credentials.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Why is this happening now?
TCF uses Xenforo as the base software package of what you see when you come here. The Xenforo (XF) developers periodically make improvements and add features meant to enhance the security, performance and general quality of experience for Xenforo users. As a part of regular maintenance, we try to keep up with the updates for these features on a reasonable basis; we don't rush to have the latest updates as soon as they become available, we watch for feedback from other XF installations, and we try to keep disruptions to a minimum.
At this point, we are 7-8 months past the last mid-level Xenforo upgrade, and our tech support is advising that we proceed with upgrading within the next month or so. A major Xenforo update is in the works and will likely be our next update target in the next year or so.
We also employ a number of add-ons made by third parties. These add-ons are not directly supported by Xenforo, and they generally require some work on the part of the third party authors to continue working with Xenforo updates. The Steam integration feature is one of those add-ons, and we have used it from the beginning of TCF with few issues - until now. This add-on does not work with the next XF update version, and the author has disappeared and removed the resources for it. A diligent search for a trusted XF developer to port/fix the feature, or a replacement for the feature, has not resulted in an acceptable solution. Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to remove the feature and move forward without it.
What do members who use this need to do now?
If you haven't linked a Steam account to your TCF account, there is nothing you need to do. You shouldn't notice anything different.
If you HAVE linked your Steam account to your TCF account, and are used to using your Steam credentials to log in to TCF, you will no longer be able to do that. Every account should have an email address and a password associated with it. You should check to ensure that you remember your password and have access to the email address for the account, and that you can log in to TCF with either username/password OR email/password. If you are having difficulty with those options, please send a PM to either Unit One or myself for assistance.
Once the add-on/feature is removed, all of the data associated with your Steam account that is stored on TCF should be removed as well. We do not now and never have had any of your personal Steam data stored on TCF; we only have the Steam ID that Valve issued to you, and some encoded/hashed strings that verified that the Steam access was granted.
If you want to make extra sure that none of your Steam data remains on TCF, you can disassociate/unlink your Steam account here. Just check the box and press the Confirm button.
If there are any questions about this, we'll try to address them below.

IMPORTANT NOTES
- This will NOT affect your Steam account or any of your games in any way
- This will NOT affect links that members have voluntarily posted links to their Steam accounts in posts, on their profile information, or in their signatures
- This will only affect members who registered their TCF account using their Steam credentials, or later associated their Steam account with their TCF account
- We intend to disable this feature on or about February 1, 2025
