Hello, Terrarians,
In the coming days, we will be removing the feature that allows people to register/login to Terraria Community Forums with their Steam account credentials.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Why is this happening now?
TCF uses Xenforo as the base software package of what you see when you come here. The Xenforo (XF) developers periodically make improvements and add features meant to enhance the security, performance and general quality of experience for Xenforo users. As a part of regular maintenance, we try to keep up with the updates for these features on a reasonable basis; we don't rush to have the latest updates as soon as they become available, we watch for feedback from other XF installations, and we try to keep disruptions to a minimum.
At this point, we are 7-8 months past the last mid-level Xenforo upgrade, and our tech support is advising that we proceed with upgrading within the next month or so. A major Xenforo update is in the works and will likely be our next update target in the next year or so.
We also employ a number of add-ons made by third parties. These add-ons are not directly supported by Xenforo, and they generally require some work on the part of the third party authors to continue working with Xenforo updates. The Steam integration feature is one of those add-ons, and we have used it from the beginning of TCF with few issues - until now. This add-on does not work with the next XF update version, and the author has disappeared and removed the resources for it. A diligent search for a trusted XF developer to port/fix the feature, or a replacement for the feature, has not resulted in an acceptable solution. Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to remove the feature and move forward without it.
What do members who use this need to do now?
If you haven't linked a Steam account to your TCF account, there is nothing you need to do. You shouldn't notice anything different.
If you HAVE linked your Steam account to your TCF account, and are used to using your Steam credentials to log in to TCF, you will no longer be able to do that. Every account should have an email address and a password associated with it. You should check to ensure that you remember your password and have access to the email address for the account, and that you can log in to TCF with either username/password OR email/password. If you are having difficulty with those options, please send a PM to either Unit One or myself for assistance.
Once the add-on/feature is removed, all of the data associated with your Steam account that is stored on TCF should be removed as well. We do not now and never have had any of your personal Steam data stored on TCF; we only have the Steam ID that Valve issued to you, and some encoded/hashed strings that verified that the Steam access was granted.
If you want to make extra sure that none of your Steam data remains on TCF, you can disassociate/unlink your Steam account here. Just check the box and press the Confirm button.
If there are any questions about this, we'll try to address them below.

IMPORTANT NOTES
- This will NOT affect your Steam account or any of your games in any way
- This will NOT affect links that members have voluntarily posted links to their Steam accounts in posts, on their profile information, or in their signatures
- This will only affect members who registered their TCF account using their Steam credentials, or later associated their Steam account with their TCF account
- We intend to disable this feature on or about February 1, 2025

Aw... Really sad to hear I'm losing my main login option. Guess I can't skip the password reset much longer now. *Makes note to reset password near the end of the month*

You could log in using steam?

This wasn't something we wanted to do, but we haven't been able to find a way around removing it. We also don't really know how many people actually use this feature - being an add-on, our canned search options don't account for this additional information.Aw... Hopefully the coming updates will bring some cool new features that will help make up for the loss of this one
If you linked the accounts, yes...

I hope so too. At least my upcoming mobile switch from chrome to firefox will help make up for it because it means my password can be saved on one device (my PC) then be used on the other right away (my phone) (Hooray for having a firefox account!)This wasn't something we wanted to do, but we haven't been able to find a way around removing it. Ok, but what will happen to the trophies/titles associated with Steam, like "Steampunker"? Will we keep those if we already had them unlocked or are they just going to completely be removed?
Any title/trophy that you already unlocked will remain yours.Ok, but what will happen to the trophies/titles associated with Steam, like "Steampunker"? Will we keep those if we already had them unlocked or are they just going to completely be removed?

If i remember correctly, one of the titles required you to link a steam account that had terraria to your tcf account, but that was changed so you simply had to indicate that you owned terraria to get the title; i'd imagine the requirements for steampunker will change as well
The trophies won't be removed; if you have the Steampunker title now, you'll get to keep it.Ok, but what will happen to the trophies/titles associated with Steam, like "Steampunker"? Will we keep those if we already had them unlocked or are they just going to completely be removed?
I don't think that the mechanism to automatically award that trophy has worked in some time, to be honest. That was the original basis for having the add-on, back when Steam was the the only place to get the game. There was a background process that would run periodically to check accounts that had Steam linked, check their game inventory, and award this trophy if it was determined that you owned the game. Over time, changes with Steam kind of broke that process and it stopped working.
So, if you have that title, it shows that you're an OG Terraria player

One time I linked my steam here, waited for 24 hours till the trophy came and unlinked my Steam. I heard of some cases where it needed only 6 hours in some cases no award at all.
I suggest changing the requirement for the Steampunker title to something like this to mitigate the steam login option removal (if implementation feasible):
If you have fulfilled all of those (* Profile posts and PMs do not count):

Don't wait! The longer you take to do this, the more likely you are to forget it.Aw... Really sad to hear I'm losing my main login option. Guess I can't skip the password reset much longer now. *Makes note to reset password near the end of the month*
Password resets don't take too long, they're just checking a few emails. Do it now while it's on your mind!

I normally would, but it's been an exhausting day already and I'm running out of mental space. Earliest I can reasonably manage is Saturday.Don't wait! The longer you take to do this, the more likely you are to forget it.

sometimes, and in this case too, i'm glad i don't have to mess with Steam's shenanigans yet (i pirate most games on desktop, but everything i have on mobile is a legitimate purchase, and thus my copy of Terraria too), but at the same time, i do feel bad for those that used it, hopefully y'all can get used to the standard login quickly
We are not changing the requirements for that trophy/title; that would be unfair to those who earned it honestly. One time I linked my steam here, waited for 24 hours till the trophy came and unlinked my Steam. I heard of some cases where it needed only 6 hours in some cases no award at all.

That way it shows that you are really engaged with Terraria related content without being a spammer or similar.

We are also not going to add any further trophies based on number of posts or reaction scores; that just invites people to 'game the system' to get a meaningless bit of digital flair.

Just wondering: How many members have Steam linked currently?
Tunnel King mentioned in a reply above that we don’t know.Just wondering: How many members have Steam linked currently?

And done.
After four years i now finally have a password.
Meant to do that for a while but didnt know how so i guess thats a benefit of this.
I am curious, you said that the steam login was a 3rd party add on and thats why its no longer going to be a feature (and the author removing it and all that).
But will that affect anything else on tcf that would be notable in any way?
