No Wood Boxes: A Building Guide

Wow, this guide helped alot! Anything I could do to improve this? (warning: big pictures)

Hello. Just wanted thoughts on this current building. I've yet to even start the separate NPC housing thats going to be connected to it. It's one of the more elaborate buildings I've made so thoughts/input would be nice.

Edit: Just a small note, those waterfalls are made with rainbow bricks.

Maybe add some frames around the windows. Oh, and some sort of railing on the outside parts midway up (the ones with the sawmill) would look good.

But yeah, that's really nice. I've never considered using mahogany with dynasty walls before.

Me again =P

Tried to brainstorm a bit on the window framing to come up with something. Tried a few different things ranging rom using different blocks to frame the entire window, platforms, different background walls, etc, this is the only one that didn't look completely terrible.

It's regular wood walls painted pink (of all the colors >_>). Also while experimenting with colors I discovered painting the glass white gave it a frosty look, which went with the snow biome, and made the entire house feel a bit more warm and cozy. (Note: A bit of further experimenting uncovered if you paint the windows red and orange you can get a sunset through the window feel.)

It's a no go with the railing suggestion. Just too cluttered sadly.

It seems overly spacious which contradicts your aim for warm and cozy.

This is a very good guide! It (Along with a tips and tricks for Building guide) Has me overflowing with ideas, Ill be sure to post a house design after awhile, and I'll be sure to link this to afew of my friends, thanks again!! Also, quick suggestion, maybe talk about the importance of colors in houses? I dont entirely remember that being covered, and it could help quite abit :D

Hey! I've started a new world recently and I've completed my Pre-Hardmode NPC housing but I think it needs a little more, any ideas?

Maybe I could make it seem like a prison with Iron doors and chain hanging around.

Well, I've found that underground builds work well with planked walls, so try having spots of those in places. Oh, and if you're going to implement that idea of yours- which you should- I recommend switching the furniture out for ebonwood variants (or shadewood if you can't access ebonwood.)
Sorry if this is a bit short; it's the morning and I have a slight cold.

So I have to make planked walls and see if I can survivie in Corruption long enough to get Ebonwood.

Well, to the creator of this thread, I present the Super Box 4000! Why have 1 box, when you can have many?

No but really I do actually like to theme up my houses I make, I just make boxes when I'm playing more so for the adventure than the building

Here are some things I've built themed around the npcs

The bricks in the party girls house are rainbow bricks, thats just hard to capture in a still image...

So any constructive critisism you would be willing to give me for any of these houses would be much appreciated.

On the topic of your Druid treehouse, you might want to do something like what I did with mine on Page 3 to give it a bit of backwall that looks good. And don't be afraid of letting them walk on the leaf blocks either. The Partygirl's fountain should probably have backwalls supporting it, as it just looks weird without any supports there. I'd personally replace the Healer's house walls with a medical white, rather than plain stone brick. On the pirate ship, you should level out the water levels on both sides, as it looks very odd for the ship to be the dividing factor of the water, rather than just resting in it.

And I'd heavily recommend extending the diagonal of the dye trader's pyramid just a smidge further out, as it just looks odd not being finished. I might also replace the very top of it with a gold cap (Like pyramids are supposed to have had, before they were stolen). And find something better than cactus doors. it just looks goofy. At the worse, replace the doors with actuators that you can activate to have an entrance. Perhaps on the second floor (as that upper area isn't counted as the same room) so that he couldn't have his room disabled long enough for him to try and find a different one (that bottom area would still be a room due to the platform roof it has counting as a door).

Hi folks.

This is my first time writing, I'm finally saying something after just reading all these years!

1.3 has been a blast and I've been playing a TON. I've been building on new worlds but this thread inspired me to update some of my box houses that I built on my favorite world (pre 1.2 ahhhh!). I don't have a before picture of my spawn point/storage facility but I'm sure you can imagine just a wood box surrounding my chests. It was painfully boring for far too long...

That's still a work in progress. This is my favorite house right now I built on a floating island before 1.3 came out. Most of it does not count as suitable so I could use the full effect of the wallpaper, but the first floor (under the stairs) does:

Lastly, for kicks and giggles. I built a ship on the edge of my world before the pirate invasion was in the game, so you can imagine my excitement when I was able to update an empty ship with new and cool stuff. Steampunk looks great in it I think! everything, of course, is always leaving room for improvement. I still plan to finish the sail, fix that shipwheel, and add more decor and furniture (like sinks!).

I have more I could add (like my huge tree I built pre 1.2 and my NPC town) but I don't know how much is too much yet, so this will have to do.
Thanks SubterraneanGamer for the post!

Here's a nice tip - Dont go Slope-mad all the time.

In the build below, it would be hard to tell it was a UFO if the glass-area up on top was sloped.

Also, take abuse of bugs. I used a "floating teleporter" glitch to get those Crafting Stations to float in mid-air, making it look a LOT better than it did before

and PAINT IS YOUR FRIEND

I used a default "waterfall block" wall at first in the beam, ended up not liking it, after a few cans of Sky Blue Paint, it matches the Ice block's color, making the beam look VERY appealing to the eye.
